Silent Hill Reviews

It looks great and has a very creepy atmosphere. Unfortunately, the script is absolute rubbish. I mean, burn the witch? Really?

Remarkably free of anything remotely scary, this ghost story relies on heaps of style to cover its quite thin plot until the action culminates on a gruesome, but fantastically un-thrilling climax. The game must certainly be better than this.

A great sense of dread and eeriness in this film

Great game adaptation. Lacks bit of better writing and dialogues

Creepy movie. I have watched this movie multiple times. The strong ensemble cast really delivered in their parts. The mom willing to do whatever to get her kid, the dad wanting to save both, the cop trying to serve justice and protect people (this cop was a hero). The movie is more gross than scary. Among the storylines are things relating to bigotry, using religion as a weapon to outcast people or worse, abuse and kill. The storyline really has some complexities going on. The music was fantastic, dark, intense and connected. Agan is not really a horror movie, rather a drama with some gross moments. The visuals are quite interesting and grotesque/macabre. I had no clue on the game it derives from but followed along and found the story fascinating.

This film is so frustrating, only because I can see a great movie lurking underneath what is on the screen. The set design is outstanding and the visuals are fantastic. The problem lies within the script. The director seems like he’s in such as rush to get to the ghouls and demons that he ignores any build up or plausible motivation for the main characters to launch head first into the ghost town. Once there, too many concurrent plots/subplots and flashbacks make the story line muddled (it’s easy enough to follow, just terribly messy execution), enough so that you eventually give up and just enjoy the beautiful set pieces. Had the creators slowed down, given the characters time to live within the film and develop the themes, and if they had trusted the audience enough to attempt a slow burn of a horror film instead of throwing every video game creature at them every four minutes for fear they might get bored, it could’ve been a very good film. As it stands, it’s a beautiful horror film to look at, with a wasted cast ( Sean Bean and the always fascinating Alice Kirge ) and wasted potential…..but it’s still worth a shot!

This movie's plot really lacked depth but the visuals were still enjoyable to watch. There wasn't really a clear motive for the girl to be chastised by the town. When you have this theme of a young child, especially female, that has paranormal powers the director really needs to give realistic and compelling reasons for the entire town to turn on her. Otherwise you just have a confused audience distracted by said confusion as to why the town chose to chastise her. The relationship between the girl from the cult town and the girl with the normal loving mother also isn't clear. When you have a character dynamic like that, where it seems like there's a reincarnation or connected spirits, there needs to be a reason for the association between the two. Such as the mother visiting the town while she was pregnant, or the daughter reading some sort of book that invited the spirit from the past generation. Americans don't typically believe reincarnation so skipping that element seems bizarre. The movie also didn't touch on how the girl gained supernatural powers. The problem here is that the cult is portrayed as in the wrong, but if the girl really did have supernatural powers then their belief system (in that universe) isn't wrong, and therefore they had concrete reasons to chastise her.

This film is pretty epic. The villain is really annoying and there's parts where it is a bit cheesy. However, this film is genuinely creepy and dark/twisted and a must watch for any real horror fan, especially of the gamer variety.

I didn't know anything about the videogame, but the movie, even if pretty bad- except the scenography, how the lore of SH- made me curious of discovering this world.

This movie has pretty weak dialogue and some bad acting, but the visuals are stunning, the atmosphere is perfectly creepy, and it actually has a creative plot. As someone who hasn't played the video game and doesn't like the horror genre in general, I really enjoyed this movie. I watch it every Halloween.

I haven't played the video games yet. Originally, I thought this movie was pretty good but upon thinking back to it, I don't think it's as good as I thought it was.

Very ambitious effort by director excellent horror film

This is still the best video game adaptation to the big screen . Christophe Gans is a big gamer and fought with Konami to get this made and it was a big success at the box office. He loves the Silent Hill games and it's amazing they used Akira Yamaoka video game score and he worked on the movie. The camera angles and the feel of the game is in this movie from begining till end. God I love the darkness siren . Incorporate the characters from the game. I'm so glad he is back directing the third movie he didn't do the second one. As a Silent Hill gamer I shed tears everytime I see this . 10/10 EPIC FANTASTIC adaptation done with love and care to the gamers of this game.

I watched this back in 2006 when it first came out, without knowing anything about the game universe. It kept me hooked for the entire duration. I was so thrilled that I played all the available games afterward and rewatched the film multiple times over the years. What captivated me the most about the movie was the story, which felt unlike anything I had seen in horror before. The topic was fresh and exciting. Additionally, the amazing soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka, straight from the games, is another reason to love the movie.

an impeccable atmosphere along with visual effects that have aged surprisingly well, help to make this a lot better than one would expect.
