Sinister Reviews
Superb horror film that remains one of the best in recent years, thanks to a great lead performance and atmospheric direction. Ethan Hawke is superb is Ellison, a struggling writer that compromises himself and his family for a big story. However, you understand his plight so much you actually sympathize with him. Behind the camera, writer/director Scott Derrickson crafts a superb horror film on a shoe string budget, delivering some real atmosphere and scares (the use of the 8 MM film is put to great use). Simply put, one of the best horror films in recent memory.
"Hide your kids". "Hide your wife". "HIDE YOUR KIDS"! "HIDE YOUR WIFE"!
This is definitely one of the scariest horror movies I have ever watched, but unfortunately, it relied heavily on horror movie tropes to progress its story. It was really fun to watch, and I definitely recommend it for horror and thriller fans!
A horror movie that served its proper purpose: I was scared after it with my heart beating. The atmosphere was on point along with the characters being interesting. It is my personal favourite horror movie and from the first scene both intrigues and sets a perfect atmosphere for a movie. Perfect 10/10
3/24/25 We chose this movie because Google rated it as the SCARIEST movie of all time, 96 of 100. It didn't raise my BP at all, totally implausible and a waste of time. Boo!
A good movie with creepy thrills and wonderful jump scares. The movie gave me a feel of maybe the Ring or VHS but mixed with demonic cult elements. The movie built up a lot of suspense to the climax which every once in a while I feel like it took to long to get to the scare but it was pretty good. The family dynamic was very believable as it didn’t feel like they were forced to love each other The one other critique i can think of was the ending as I would have wanted to see Ashley kill her Mom and Trever first before she killed her dad as the ending felt abrupt. The movie was a good watch though and creep af.
Upon watching for the first time, this quickly became one of my favorite horror movies. Yes, it has many formulas that are concurrent to the times - the babadook-kinda monster, the phone will ring and youll die in 7 days - but this one is definetively original and scary. Won't surprise you as much the second time through, but overall holds up well for a good popcorn horror night. If you haven't seen it, then watch it.
This film is able to creates tension both visually and audibly. All in all, this movie did what it was supposed to do. It was a scary movie.
Él genuinamente creía que no les iba a pasar nada malo en una casa donde colgaron a una familia entera ☺️. Me gustó mucho la verdad.
I decided to watch this movie a few nights ago because Jason Blum wanted to make it crossover with Insidious, a horror franchise I quite like, and because it's quite a beloved horror movie. And oh god, this is fantastic. The concept of a true crime writer solving a mystery is amazing and is done so well. The slow burn of him watching the tapes (which is an amazing concept: snuff films are something I hope horror does more as it's a concept I find scary because of how real it is) and piecing things together is amazing, and so is Officer So and So, his assistant. It's just a very well made story. However, the best part of this movie is the tapes. They feel like real snuff films would, but with a supernatural twist. They all feel dark and murky as well, which is a vibe you want to create when it comes to creepy films in movies. I can definitely see the inspiration this movie took from The Ring, to say the least. For context, by the way, this movie was inspired by a nightmare the writer, C. Robert Cargill, had after watching The Ring. And I can see the inspirations. Overall, it's an amazing horror movie with incredibly effective scares.
Sort of brilliant, attention capturing. I got goosebumps each second and it didn't stop until the end of the movie.
Sinister, expertly utilizes the old school technology of super 8 home movies and the modern day era of true crime writers to create a story that will satisfy most horror aficianados. Combining bits from the occult, true crime, foreign religion and the classic boogeyman into a story that continually ups the frights and suspense right up until the very end. This movie does a great job reminding us how to be afraid of things that go bump in the night. It's no wonder studies were done on individuals' heart rates while watching it.
Sinister is one of those once in a generation films. Brilliantly conducted. Cinematography, soundtrack, creep factor, jump scares, lighting was on point. Some annoying parts, like refusing to explain anything to anybody, despite wild paranormal activity happening throughout the house and the wife who allegedly “supported” the lead showing anything but support. The intermittent comedy helped ease the tension. But, overall, this is one of few films post-2000 that’s actually worth watching more than once. Not sure why critics gave it such bad reviews or what the hell they’re looking for in horror, but this gem had it all. I don’t know about scariest of all time, but it’s definitely not The Exorcist, either. Worth a watch, but I’d recommend a very dark, quiet environment, as there’s a lot of silent, low tone parts.
This movie was truly terrifying. It was very original and fairly easy to follow. Even if it does seem like the main character ignored far too many warning signs, you aren't watching this movie for the plot. It is truly terrifying and deeply unsettling, while also not being overly gore heavy or jumpscare heavy.
This movie is sick unlike Hereditary.
This had me pretty freaked out. Those videos are the stuff of nightmares.
I didn't like the movie, I was bored and it wasn't a scary movie at all, it just had a bit of a mysterious side to it, other than that I didn't understand why they exaggerated the movie so much so that I didn't understand what was scary about the movie anyway, even though it didn't have an ending, it wasn't a good movie at all and it wasn't a scary movie at all.
It's amazing film 🗿
Shockingly spooky, very little unnecessary gore or violence, with the gore being tasteful and additive to the story. The story and lore are simple enough to follow along and interesting enough to keep an audience’s attention. A very fun movie for horror fans.
