Six Minutes to Midnight Reviews

Mar 14, 2025

You would think anything with Judi and Jim Broadbent would be 5* unfortunately Eddie Izzard is also in it and the script is not any good either.

Fascinating story, based on true events, photographic composition of interior scenes were stunning. Low ratings on rotten tomatoes is surprising. Watched it on Kanopy, for free.

Truly awful script, lacklustre acting apart from Dame Judi, and a very thin storyline.

I'm not sure why Six Minutes To Midnight has received such harsh reviews, but in my opinion they're undeserved. My impression of it is that It's crafted in a 'Film noir' manner reminiscent of old Bogart movies. So there's violence without gore, and intrigue that is relatively easy to follow, and rightly so. It is an artistic piece, and does a fine job of displaying the craftsmanship of the writers and cast. I'd watch it again, the same way I'd watch the Maltese Falcon, High Sierra, or Key Largo. Applause to Eddie Izzard - Bravo

Glaring historical inaccuracies. Calendar shows Saturday August 26th 1939, the war started on Sunday 3rd September. In mid August 1939 it shows newspaper sellers shouting about Poland and war coming, there was no hint that Poland was to be the cassus belli for start of WW2. Nonsense plot with wooden acting.

Oh dear… even Judi Dench couldn't save this. Interesting topic though. If you're a fan of both Judi and Eddie, give it a watch but don't expect too much.

I wonder if Dame Judy read the script before signing up for this eye roller.

BRITAIN 1939. HITLER'S GRIP IS TIGHTENING. NO-ONE CAN BE TRUSTED. Six Minutes to Midnight is a 2020 British war drama film directed by Andy Goddard 🏫 It's good 🙂 I'd recommend it if you like this genre 👍🏼 While not perfect, this is still a well produced and interesting period mystery film… Summer 1939. Influential families in Nazi Germany have sent their daughters to a finishing school in an English seaside town to learn the language and be ambassadors for a future looking National Socialist. A teacher there sees what is coming and is trying to raise the alarm. But the authorities believe he is the problem.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

I thought it must have been one of those unlikely old spy thriller talkies from the 70s. It grew more and more unlikely as 1 hour and 20 minutes approached. I feared for the gels - the airstrip they lit may have been OK for a flying bike. Thank goodness the pilot saw the lights in more generous terms. I was pleased he didn't land. What was under the squeaking chair, I wonder? I missed that.

It was really boring and nothing really happned in the entire movie dont go unless you are 70

To put it in the most British words possible, it was "bloody awful". Up until this movie I thought Eddie Izzard was pretty brilliant but taking credit for writing this thing as well as his horrible acting certainly takes my opinion down a peg regrettably. It's like the most amateurish movie. Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench can't help it. Very, very disappointing.

I found this film interesting and I'd watch Jui Dench read the phone book. I thought it had a decent plot and not nearly as bad as some of the movies today that are filmed with lots of bad language and drugs. The critics were wrong again!

Low budget excellently executed drama. Great music, great cast, in quality 4k . Quite why it's scored so low isbeyond my comprehension. It was actually gripping.

WW2 era spy movie. Decent story and acting.

Anyone who knows Bexhill immediately senses dissonance between the film and reality. The film is entertaining in parts but I was never convinced by it.

It was a decent enough movie for a boring Sunday, but nothing I'd go out of my way to recommend (my husband loved it, but he has bad taste in movies, LOL!) Based very loosely on a real British Finishing School attended by all German girls, daughters of prominent Nazis. It's 1939 and the British spies are keeping an eye on the German girls expecting war to break out soon and the girls to be quietly summoned back to Germany. The acting was average. The pace was slow. The movie is predictable (I kept telling my husband what was going to happen before it did) There is no real tension, because it all seemed a bit pointless, but admittedly, I was engaged enough to keep watching and see how it all played out. As others mentioned it seems to go down hill towards the end when the tension should've been building. There is no foul language, nudity or gore. It was just ok IMHO! 2.5 stars Jan2022.

Keystone Cops meetsThe Sound of Music. If taken as drama then this movie is awful on every count. Poor script, stilted acting, thin plot, badly directed… the list just goes on and on. On the other hand, if we view the movie as being less serious - even slapstick - then we can play the parlour game of "pick which movie this scene is from". The girls standing on the stairs is the "So long, farewell" scene in the best Von Trapp style, whereas the chase scenes come straight from any comedy film from the silent era. Hitchcock scores well with more than a passing reference to "The 39 Steps". Throw in "Picnic at Hanging Rock" for good luck and it should keep the family and friends chuckling for a while.
