Sixty Six Reviews
This is a relatively easy watch - its mildly amusing at times and features some decent characters. The cast includes Helena Bonham Carter and Catherine Tate. It's not a particularly good film, nor is it awful but it passes the time ok. I did feel there was a nice sense of British family life at the time it's set (the 1960s) and it had a bit of heart to it, so I'm giving it this rating. I would recommend this film, yes.
A perfectly likeable story of a young Jewish boy in London, 1966 who is planning his bar mitzvah, only to find to his horror, that it is scheduled for the very day that England play Germany in the World Cup final at Wembley. Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Marsden play parents to Gregg Sulkin's Bernie. There's a few good laughs and it does have a genuinely loveable, feel good script even for a complete football hater like me.
This was a delight. Bonham Careter is a such a good actress and the attention to detail was great. Charming.................
an absolutely charming piece, i can't think of many coming-of-age movies that are comparable to this one.
Grade: A A pleasant coming-of-age film with plenty of heart and humour. The movie is about a Jewish boy, Bernie, whose bat-mitzvah is on the same day as the world cup. Definitely a bit of a bummer; it's just like finding out you have an exam on your birthday! I think it was really well acted; this has one of my all time favourite actresses Helena Bonham-Carter who never fails to disappoint and new-comer Gregg Sulkin was superb. It had a lot of sentimental and heartfelt moments for example a bat-mitzvah not being all about how much money you can spend. I expected this film to be a heavy and woeful about Jewish suffering, but it was the opposite. I did find Bernie's whining and self pity about not getting his perfect bat-mitzvah a tad irritating at times, but on the whole this is a really lovely film, that is suitable for all audiences. I highly recommend this!
I thought this film was great, I loved it, Helena bonham Carter starred in it and Jason Watkins (Gavin from Trollied starred in it), he only had a very small part, would love it on DVD
Esse filme me deprimiu. Tadinho do moleque, porra. Ele só queria um Bar Mitzvah legal, um pouco mais de atenção.
This is a really sweet and subtle comedy about a Jewish boy who is so desperate that his Bar Mitzvah is not ruined, that he hopes that England get knocked out of the World Cup so that their big day does not clash with his. It was great seeing footage of England's 1966 campaign and I could really identify with the boy's feelings.
Absolutely charming, funny, heartwarming, and delightful film!! Truly splendid. By the last scene, I was teary eyed and grinning from ear to ear. Kudos!!
This is pretty much the only movie i ever was on the brink of tears. It's so powerful and so beautiful. Not a big-budget movie yet it's another david and goliath story, the little film beats the big ones.
This movie is a real "sleeper". Funny, authentic to the period and wonderfully acted. It is the funniest film I've seen since "Death at a Funeral". The child actors are absolutely terrific.
Heartwarming and funny british comedy about a young lad who has planned his Barmitzvah on the same day as the 1966 World Cup Final. Doh!! Eddie Marsan is brilliant, as usual. A little gem of a film.
Lovely lovely film. The whole story knits in very well together, atmospheric and moving. Good British film.
