Sleight Reviews
Its about a street Magican and drug dealer. i dare say the writers dont know anything more about street magic or drug dealers than what youd learn from a quick scroll on tiktok.
A near-perfect indie movie with the perfect amount of sci-fi ingredients. I love how the writer did not shy away from any of the risky concepts that would have been edited out by less confident hands. The plot took things in an interesting direction, but everything still landed in the end. The acting is superb, the writing is surprisingly fresh, and there was no waste. The final images are brilliant because they happen in the viewer's imagination, but it still somehow works because the movie has earned it. Prepare to have faith in indie fims again.
Overall an enjoyable watch. While there were elements that required a bit of willing suspension of disbelief, the suspense draws you in. It was slower moving at times but didn't lose momentum. Dule Hill breaks his usual archetype and plays a psychopath believably, while the other roles were solidly acted as well. The movie certainly won't leave you speechless, but also won't leave you disappointed.
A clever blend of rap, mature characters who make mistakes & sci fi. I really wanted to like this movie, but it refused to be liked. Did I nod off or can someone explain the plot? Thought I understood until the end.
Finalul nu e ce trebuie
It had potential to be good, but the drug dealing predicament was thought of by a middle class person or middle class group of people who have no idea how those situations work.
After seeing Sweetheart I had the urge to check out director JD Dillard's earlier work, and judging by the solid watchability of both films I think Dillard will be a genre auteur to watch when he really hits his stride. (Also, props to the affable Dulé Hill for playing against type in a performance both cold-blooded and hilarious in turn.)
I'm always saddened that more people haven't heard of this film. J.D. Dillard knocked it out of the park. There are a couple slow moments, but it fits the tone, and this is on my list of must-see sci-fi films.
Rarely is a movie so scientifically flawed - the central plot device of this film is so ridiculous that it might as well be an Iron Man movie with repulsors. Additionally - aluminum (baseball bat), copper and lead (bullet) are not even magnetic.
The only magic trick here is to exploit a romance with a teenage pusher to peddle some violence, always the same. (Mauro Lanari)
a good premise, as well as a good vs, evil flick, but not very well played out Spoiler alert - as if almost everyone doesn't now - magnets don't interact with plastic, bullets, coins, etc. Hard to suspend belief when such a premise is used
Pretty good movie. Though its “surviving in the hood/drug dealing” story is very familiar and a little worn, its sci-fi mystery element is intriguing and fun, its magic is well-executed and its performances are great, especially Latimore, Reid and Hill.
