The Sorcerer's Apprentice Reviews

The whole movie seems to spill out onto the floor in a stinking mess, and when it’s over, the audience is left to ponder how—given its expensive price tag, notable stars, and an admittedly interesting premise—the result could be so awful.

It's clear that there is no respect for the classics. [Full review in Spanish]

Sadly, there is precious little left of the genius that once was Cage, the man whose electric insanity made instant classics of Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona.

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 19, 2021

Nicolas Cage's performances have become infinitely more entertaining the more ludicrous the characters and the sillier the stories.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 30, 2020

Has virtually everything you've come to know and love from an escapist Nicolas Cage action flick.

| Original Score: 2.5/4.0 | Sep 24, 2020

Perhaps the biggest problem with "Apprentice" lies in the script -- which is basically on autopilot from the opening scene.

| Original Score: C | May 9, 2019

A formulaic, coincidental, not-at-all-hilarious schlock-fest that can't even be saved by some obviously spendy special effects. I'd say skip this one, unless you're curious about whether or not Cage's incredible hair weave will win some kind of award.

It's a whole load of silly but there's enough fun to make this a decent slice of forgettable escapism.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 23, 2018

The Sorcerer's Apprentice wasn't bad so much as it was terribly dumb.

In a post-Potter world where fantasy flicks are ten a-penny, there is simply nothing here to make [The Sorcerer's] Apprentice stand out from the crowd.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 19, 2017

It's strange to have a film have so much magic within and yet ultimately not have enough of the right kind of magic to make it work.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 25, 2012

drawing a line of lack-of-inspiration true and dire directly to Renny Harlin's already-completely-forgotten The Covenant.

| Original Score: 1/4 | May 9, 2011

As an object to look at and be zoomed along in like an amusement park ride -- which is all it's meant to be -- this movie is pretty much more of the summery same.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 4, 2011

It also looks quite nice with some well-designed adventure moments and clean camera work that's flashy but usually elegant. But that's a few islands of interest on a sea of interchangeable marketing parts that's all sizzle and no substance.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 1, 2011

Whether intentional or not, The Sorcerer's Apprentice plays like Disney's stalled attempt to launch a stripped down Harry Potter-like franchise.

| Original Score: C | Mar 9, 2011

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is one of those films that feels very close to being good.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 16, 2011

Frankly, it's completely dorky. And yet it slips by because of its wise decision to fully embrace that dorkiness.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 9, 2010

Light on logic, and not always polished, the film plays like a gonzo big-budget Roger Corman B-movie. It's filled with wonderfully imaginative visuals, interesting characters and spectacle galore.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 4, 2010

This PG-rated Jerry Bruckheimer production is slick as an oiled weasel: larded with fancy special effects, canned romance, corny humor and a general lack of sophistication. [Blu-ray]

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 26, 2010

...a disappointingly repetitive and flat-out dull piece of work...
