Spaceman Reviews
Adam Sandler is the latest ‘lonely man in space thinking about things and getting sad’ in Johan Renck’s protracted and uninspiring Spaceman.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 3, 2024
In a generation expected to do so much more with a whole lot less, Spaceman gently nudges us in the direction of holding onto the tangible and wills us to stop yearning for life to begin when days are already ticking by.

By the end, I didn’t question the logic of the narrative. But I felt genuinely moved, like something inside me had shifted without noticing. That alone is worth the trip.

Perhaps Sandler’s intention in playing Jakob was to have an excuse to beef up the portfolio with something more reserved than anything we’ve gotten from him before.

For a while, the sight of Sandler talking to a sizeable spider has its moments. But director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) does not sustain interest into the final act, with a story that gets increasingly maudlin and sentimental.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 9, 2024
It’s a half-interesting, half-baked illustration weighed down by a listless melancholy that sedates more than inspires.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 18, 2024
It takes a lot of guts to attempt a screen adaptation of such an abstract science fiction / fantasy story, but director Johan Renck pulls it off, mostly with the help of a strong lead performance from Adam Sandler.

No matter how much Sandler makes the audience feel for Jakub, it can be hard to sustain an entire picture with nothing more than overarching sadness. And “Spaceman” never finds another register.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 8, 2024
Spaceman is beautiful to look at and it features another great dramatic performance from Adam Sandler. The rest of the movie is a mixed bag with a rather lackluster story, some terrible pacing and a mostly wasted supporting cast.

It's a little too slow and a little too philosophical.

It goes downhill. Meditative but interesting.

A beautifully strange premise and a strong effort from Sandler can't save this one. Slow, slow, slow.
| Original Score: 2.35/5 | Mar 22, 2024
It's meticulously thought out and yet open for exploration, Johan Renck's visually marvelous journey is an oddly heavy one in the most unexpected ways.

Male loneliness is the entire fulcrum of the picture’s new-age bildungsroman. There is nothing else.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 17, 2024
Had Spaceman rooted itself a little deeper into the soul of humanity, it would have been out of this world.

...Indulgent and profoundly tedious... You'll also feel as if you've been isolated in a spacecraft with no conceivable purpose.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 14, 2024
Spaceman is the story of the eternal and neverending war between introverts and extroverts. And as it always is in real life, eventually, the introvert must lose.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 12, 2024
While this beautifully filmed movie creates an attractively authentic version of space travel on screen, there is an underlying dullness and misplaced self-importance that smothers all creative potential here.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 11, 2024
This interstellar odyssey has a strange and beguiling buddy story if nothing else new under the sun.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 8, 2024
In the farthest reaches of outer space, Kafka is transcended. Spaceman expresses our anxiety rather than leaving it at politics.
