Speak No Evil Reviews
The Danish Speak No Evil (2022) smartly utilizes dark social satire to slowly, quietly submerge viewers into genuinely disturbing horror.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Sep 17, 2024
Speak No Evil rips apart the false sense of security that people have when they think strangers are instant friends. The horror in this thriller isn’t delivered until the movie’s last third, but it packs a very bleak wallop.

Speak No Evil is an excruciating watch, and one worth surrendering ourselves to. A provocative satire of middle-class sensibilities, it forces its audience to look inwards in a way hitherto unexplored.

Rather than invading the victim’s home, Tafdrup’s film turns the house into an invader itself, displacing the victims into a state of constant discomfort only amplified by the consistent invasion of their personal boundaries.

Speak No Evil is artfully crafted with the intent for its viewers to have an unpleasant experience. That intention was fulfilled, and my experience was, in fact, unpleasant.

It builds tension and horror from its opening minutes. Christian Tafdrup, needs nothing more than a highly indicative soundtrack and a montage sequence to let us know everything that will happen in less than five minutes. [Full review in Spanish]

Had the movie not unraveled the way it did, Speak No Evil could have solidified itself as one of the great low-budget horror flicks. The first half still belongs in that category, but the ending needed something more to elevate the themes of parenthood.

Speak No Evil is exhaustingly tense with desperate performances enduring cerebrally hellish behavior. Christian and Mads Tafdrup know how to drive the audience to the brink of insanity while throwing off the scent of foreseeable expectations.

The filmmakers have us wondering if our protagonists are actually making matters worse themselves. We're so quick to forgive and forget that a monster blaming us for their actions isn't wholly wrong.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 13, 2023
This is a slow-building, relentlessly threatening piece of horror.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Jan 5, 2023
Speak No Evil is a deeply disturbing interrogation of human relationships and social niceties. It’s terrifying and merciless, and if you can stomach it, one of the most exhilarating cinematic experiences of the year.

As a change of pace from the Sundance norm, Speak No Evil gets the job done, buoyed in part by the novel cultural politics of its Western European faceoff.

What makes this so effective isn't just the violence, but the sense that we're complicit through our own moral cowardice, that title both a teaser and a rebuke.

A malevolent satire about the Nordic tradition of taking good manners to the max, with a nihilistic undertone... [Full review in Spanish]

Speak No Evil experiments with its setting and impressively shows the inactivity, almost inability, of its characters to defend themselves. [Full review in Spanish]

'Speak No Evil' certainly takes its time to show you the horrible lesson beneath the smiles, but will have you yelling at the screen, imploring the leading players to act.
