Stake Land Reviews

Jan 19, 2025

This is a great low budget apocalyptic movie. It is so well done. You really care about the characters in the movie. The makeup effects looks good on the vampires. The story runs smooth and is filled with tense horror, action scenes. It's gripping ending will make you go and watch Stakeland 2. It is also very good.

A fairly new and fresh take on the standard vampire flick. Believable characters you care about, slow brooding atmosphere interspersed with some gory violence. I really enjoyed this.

ZOMBIELAND meets 28 DAYS LATER The question you need to ask before watching Stake Land is how similar is it to Zombieland? The answer: Very similar, but strikingly different in many ways. It may have more in common with 28 Days Later, with the onset of the premise. But it has an imagination of its own, to be sure. As most of it takes place in the Adirondack mountains, the scenery is lush throughout most of the film. The cinematography is quite good, which helps support the framework. The acting is definitely on or slightly above par, especially from Connor Paolo who went on to have bit parts in some other movies. Paolo is mildly entertaining as the youngster who latches on to the older Mister character, deeply reminiscent of Eisenberg and Harrelson in Zombieland. Having come out a year later than Zombieland, it's clear the influence. Even the title, "Stake Land" is uttered in a clear voice-over inspired by the previous movie's success. There are really three types of vampire movies: those that focus on the victims, such as I Am Legend, those that focus on the vampires, such as Interview with a Vampire, and those that divvy up both sides, such as From Dusk Til Dawn. This movie falls in the victims category, with mostly one-dimensional monsters as the vampires until they start to evolve later in the movie into more of a From Dusk Til Dawn version. Zombieland minus the humor, 28 Days Later with vampires, or a dumbed down From Dusk Til Dawn, anyway you cut it, this movie uses other vampire movies as its stock and blends the components only semi-competently. Entertaining? Yes. Enough to write home about? Barely.

A reasonable post-apocalyptic vampire flick. Reasonably well-acted, likeable and well-developed characters and plenty of action-filled scenes with some pretty nasty vamps. A kind of poor man's The Walking Dead is probably the best comparison here.

its actually a bad movie i have no idea how people would give it more than 3 out of 10, its has maybe one or two good scenes the rest its just blatantly boring and stupid, the story felt like it was inspired by a cheap PS2 apocalypse game, good poster though. bad, boring, and pointless story bad acting bad characters awful villains bad soundtrack worst ending i have seen in a while stay far away from it!

Never quite gets beyond a long pilot for a longer series quality, but watchable and we'll executed. Cast are strong and the story is pretty good. Worth it.

Normal vampire movie with a good storyline and beautiful settings. The action scenes are beautifully done and the dark atmosphere that the film generates is perfectly rendered.

My one of the favourite Zombievampire movie ever! really unpredictable and strong characters movie tangled with the cool background music which gives you relieved feeling. The characters in the movie gives you strong desire to live rather than give up! though there is heartbreak at the end but which is swipe out with the other character. Really Really Great movie!

You have already settled for an average zombie flick at best, and then some film you have never heard of comes along and proves greatness is still possible. I'm genuinely surprised Stake Land has managed to stay below the radar, because it's a really good movie. The human survivors face a zombie-vampire hybrid, where your brains are at risk after sunset. Additionally, there are unfriendly groups of humans waiting to prey on you. It's a nice setup. What Stake Land manages to do is tell a compelling story, deliver competent acting, and somehow stretch their budget to make the landscape look the way it's supposed to after society has fallen. I never felt like I was watching a B movie, despite the group of unknown actors. Had they cast a couple mega stars in the lead roles, this would have been a huge hit. The style resembles that of The Walking Dead series, with a bit of Zombieland's social dynamic thrown in. I liked how they gave the audience glimpses of the outbreak through old newspapers or magazines lying about. The pacing was just right--dramatic elements mixed with plenty of zombie slaughter. Reminded me some of The Road, but with zombies and less gloom. A movie like this makes up for the hundred or so average ones I had to sift through before finding it. Rating: B+

Sorry, critics. This movie has a good story, a good script, a good director, good actors, and it's all-around fun to watch. I didn't have high hopes for it. Almost didn't bother. Glad I did. You can pick it apart if you want, but if you just want to enjoy a flick, this one's great. I watched it twice.

A noble post apocalyptic vampire film. It's true that the genre is really worn out, and that there have been some terrible entries, but Stake Land is one of the best of the 2010s. For a low budget film, the performances by a bunch of unknown actors are surprisingly strong, and the special effects too. Its grainy, gritty throwback to older apocalyptic films like the George A. Romero zombie flicks is impressive, and the movie also has tones of bloodshed and gory vampire killings to entertain horror fans. But it also has a bit of a dramatic feel to it, with the relationship between two different characters. Overall, Stake Land is an achievement in the horror, and yet is unfortunately overlooked. Recommended !!

The usual tiresome Hollywood inversion of good and evil. The strawman portrayal of so-called Christians is absurd and everything is derivative. The writers are not very original and have a poor grasp about how human nature really works.

Stake Land has strong characters, a lucid script, plenty of action, and something more substantial to make it better-than-average.
