Stephen Curry: Underrated Reviews
A lot of the footage is compelling, and it’s enjoyable to watch the way Curry rose from boy to man. But the film doesn’t go that deep—and leaves out a lot of compelling angles.

Underrated is a captivating and inspirational look at what it takes to be the best. You don't have to be a basketball fan to admire Stephen Curry's amazing journey.

A spate of documentaries produced by athletes and leagues are more interested in settling scores than in the game.

There’s little bravado, virtually no famous faces offering hagiographic praise. As authorised sports documentaries go, it’s like Curry himself: dedicated and persistent.

Stephen Curry: Underrated is a perfect family documentary for sports fans and anyone inspired by someone accomplishing their dreams. Just not as insightful as one could hope.

While we appreciate that he’s a private guy, Curry and director Nicks only pull back the curtain so much. We would have liked to see a more personal portrait, instead of so many basketball highlights and occasional scenes at home. But still worth a watch.

The film revels in showing up detractors, but not to a point where it’s obnoxious.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 26, 2023
Curry is a remarkable player, and the film is a tightly-crafted, well-produced retelling of his impressive career; but it doth protest a bit too much at times.

Peter Nicks doesn't come up with one idea outside of the basic sports doc manual, but to see him [Curry] train and shoot hoops in the intimacy of practices is even more impressive than the feats he accomplishes on the court. [Full review in Spanish]

Underrated doesn’t offer any groundbreaking insight into Curry as a person or an athlete. But it is a good reminder of just how long he’s been amazing.
| Jul 24, 2023
Peter Nicks’ documentary lacks the necessary analysis and insight needed to uncover the person behind Stephen Curry.
| Jul 24, 2023
The result is a film that is entertaining without rising to revelatory, an enjoyable watch for anyone wishing to spend some more time with one of the NBA’s preeminent faces during the long offseason lull.

Not only does Nicks find a way to make 'Stephen Curry: Underrated' personal, he also tells a spectacular story, with organically built-in highs and lows.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 21, 2023
At its core, “Underrated” possesses the drama of a Hollywood underdog story, which doesn’t make it less stirring even if one knows the outcome.

Much like the Michael Jordan doc “The Last Dance,” this beautifully constructed (and much more economical) narrative operates on its own terms, with a beautiful score guiding the viewer through his life.

The main thread is his 2008 junior-year season at... Davidson, where under McKillop’s humanistic approach the Wildcats go shockingly deep in the NCAA tourney. The other great aspect of the film is Curry’s commitment to getting his college degree.

... digs beyond the highlights with a compelling exploration of perseverance and work ethic that transcends the typical fawning athlete profile. The film finds emotional depth in Curry’s well-documented journey to greatness.

However underwhelming this star portrait may be, it has a winner's spirit.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 21, 2023
What comes as a cost for greatness? “Stephen Curry: Underrated” never bothers to get beneath the surface and ultimately gives off an artificial gloss in the form of great highlights.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jul 21, 2023
It's a sports story through and through, which can be as fun but is as limited as that sounds.
