Stoker Reviews
... I was captivated by this world and by Park’s mesmerizing mix of the visceral and ethereal.

A case of style over substance, but the style we have is exceptional.

Stunningly gorgeous and more than a little subversive, the technical prowess of Chan-wook's craft elevates Wentworth Miller's Baby Dexter premise into glossy, decadent art. If only there were more Kidman!
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 30, 2023
“Stoker” is a twisted psychological thriller oozing with Hitchcockian influence and mixed with traces of classic horror.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 25, 2022
Park is more of Argento type of filmmaker and his visual prowess is in full display here. Stoker made me gasp many times in its numerous brilliant moments. The transition shot from hair to grass alone is worth the admission.

Thankfully, this director dislikes sentimentality. Park takes these beloved figures and unceremoniously exposes their failings.

"It's in atmosphere and character more than dialogue that Miller's script sings."

Masterful suspense work, quiet grace, and hidden perversions come together into a truly remarkable film. "Stoker" takes you to dark, unsettling places, confusing and confounding emotional responses at every turn, and toying with morality.

What follows is an unorthodox take on a psychological drama, fully loaded with a raft of toxic interpersonal tensions.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 23, 2020
The juices are flowing, the thrill, the edginess, the excitement and manipulative psychological magic of the movies is back with Stoker.

Easily one of the best screenwriting debuts of recent years, Stoker is chillingly good; a stylish, visual treat.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 21, 2019
Stoker is an art-house film too in love with itself, squeezing faux depth out of its vacuous premise.
| Original Score: 2.2/5 | Nov 19, 2019
Park directs with such lyrical assurance that, even as we're conscious of being coolly manipulated, this narcotic thriller gets under the skin and arrests the pulse, like an injection administered by a night nurse with a deeply sinister sense of humour.

Even if by the time it wraps itself up, and it feels like no great mystery has been unearthed, the strengths of Stoker by far make up for any of its minor deficiencies.

The visual style is eye-strokingly gorgeous, with set decoration, production design, and editing that together make up for the holes in pacing and storyline.
| Jul 30, 2019
Park's latest is a sinisterly seductive slice of suspense, with an unexpectedly supernatural bravura.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 9, 2019
Park is a director of detail, and nothing goes unnoticed here.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 14, 2018
Park Chan-Wook was aiming for a Hitchcockian feel with this one, but we instead got a Brian De Palma film, and not a good one.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Nov 1, 2018
Unfortunately, acting and stunning technical ability cannot elevate a B-level script very high.
