Stoker Reviews
A masterful exploration of the paradoxes that can manifest when a truly creative auteur fully employs all sensory dimensions a film can encompass, making use of sumptuous and stylish visual aesthetics - creating a world halfway between realism and a Tim Burton film - and an incredible sound design which explores the hypersensitive hearing of Mia Wasikowska’s grieving heroine as she tries to understand her changing world in the aftermath of her father’s death. Through this hyper-sensory approach we are immersed in a world that turns between the mysterious and otherworldly, to the familiar and uncanny, from innocence to primal desires, from the simple and subtle to the complex, disturbing, and deeply macabre. A veritable feast of a film whose delectable atmosphere lingers on long after the credits have rolled.
so disappointed. by the end i was definitely amused from the timeline and storyline, though some would find it clever, it felt pretentious. i love gothic cinema, but this was not the best. mia wasikowska was fantastic in this role though, so witty and unhinged.
I thought the story was one, but it was completely different since the trailer makes you believe that the plot will go down a path that doesn't exist, so I think this film talks about people's psyches, about the awakening of the dark side of each one, which could make a beautiful story, but here, we have something a bit still, a bit strange, a bit confusing until its ending. It can please or irritate depending on your mood. Director Park Chan-wook tries to maintain a suspenseful atmosphere but doesn't develop it very well. Actress Mia Wasikowska's performance is perfect, as she plays India Stoker, an isolated teenager, few friends, with the "dark side of the force" awakening. And the setting to develop the story was very well chosen. I also thought the choice of the title in Portuguese was good. And what a beautiful "lost" teenager...
Matthew Goode's performance was electric.
A bit disappointing. As there didn't turn out to be a supernatural element to things the dad's fears and bond with her uncle seemed remarkably convenient. It felt like the initial hints of a connection to the (almost) eponymous Bram were all that were holding a lot of it together. A shame.
Great twists and turns with solid acting to go along with it!
A different kind of Stepfather movie. What made me wonder is that for a simple story movie has a huge casting. Like Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode.
India (Mia Wasikowska) is left adrift after the sudden death of her father (Dermot Mulroney), the only person she was effectively able to relate to. Her life takes a dramatic turn when her uncle (Matthew Goode), whom she has never met, moves in with her and her mother (Nicole Kidman). Park Chan-Wook's Stoker is a stylish, low-key, deliberately paced psychological drama about loss, trust, and betrayal, filled with understated but effective performances and an atmosphere that can be cut with a knife. Despite its somber tone, Park playfully experiments with some odd camera angles, creative scene transitions, and interesting sound effects. It isn't for all tastes, but anyone interested in a quiet, contemplative thriller will find it of interest.
It is hard not to feel the Hitchcockian vibes coming off this suspenseful family drama that leans heavily into gothic horror. This has been recommended to me frequently, has been on my watch list for years, and yet somehow still did not disappoint. I found the off balance nature of the narrative quite pleasing as the action unfolded and motivations were revealed slowly as the story progressed, keeping the viewer interested and engaged. I will definitely be excited to check out more from Park Chan-wook in the future as I found his aesthetic extremely appealing all around. Special mention needs to be made for that visually stimulating hair brushing scene. Stoker is definitely a film I could see rating even higher on a rewatch. 7.5/10
"Stoker" presents an elaborated story of two psychopaths (India and Charlie) and someone with an unspecified mental illness (Evelyn). These three characters show interesting traits from a psychological point of view, obviously morally wrong, but I nevertheless love the intricate behaviours they engage in. I also like India's evolution throughout the movie. Although the end of the movie seems to imply that India happily makes her way to New York to start a new life, using the money and resources that her father facilitated to Charlie, the chances are that, with four bodies buried in her garden, an assassinated sheriff, and a mother who hates her, she will eventually be caught by the police.
High style with riveting performances and a hat tip to Hitch. Matthew Goode is astonishing in a mult-layered performance. The exquisite Piano Duet with Goode and Mia Wasikowska is utterly erotic! Must see!
This movie is just weird. I liked it but I didn't fully understand it. Great acting. Guess i'll look for an explanation elsewhere.
Ultra dumb cliche low budget piece of crap with all actors stupidly defenseless and screaming all the time.
I liked it.. Despite it was a bit disturbing and had disgusting scenes. There's something attracting in the movie, the way actors express their feelings, beauty of nature, deep psychological feelings.. It's interesting to see how maniacs think
Without it's underlying perverse notes, it's little more than a half baked coming of age story that follows a tragedy.
