Storm Boy Reviews
An unexpectedly moving tale about the importance of familial ties as well as the need for environmental regulations and preservation.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Nov 14, 2020
The result is actually less effective as family entertainment, and a bit heavy-handed. But it still has measures of scenic and sentimental appeal that should win over most viewers, particularly those not already invested...

The story has been updated with an environmental element, it is about 20 minutes too long and there's no real drama, but children who love animal films should especially enjoy it.

It was worth the remake.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 6, 2020
Sweet enough to be a slam dunk for animal lovers, while Bruce Young's crisp, cool cinematography acts like a fresh breeze through a sentimental, largely loveable story.

If this 2019 version of Storm Boy, ... is supposed to honour the legacy of Colin Thiele's text, then one has to wonder whose dog Thiele ran over first.

The movie is still a serviceable entertainment for wee ones.

It has the visual wonder and strangeness of a Carroll Ballard movie like The Black Stallion or Fly Away Home. And the skeptical-looking pelicans are surprisingly endearing.

It's sort of disposable, but kind of sweet.

It's an entirely serviceable, enjoyable little product that proves difficult for the viewer to not become invested

From production craft to the thematic storytelling of inspiration, the movie carries a simple sweetness that deserves an audience.

Storm Boy sinks under the weight of its obviousness.

While there's obviously a line connecting the two stories, the clash between Michael's romanticized youth and the tech-heavy contemporary setting feel like an odd fit at times.

A nice old fashioned family film and a possible introduction to the Australian New Wave.
| Original Score: B+ | Apr 5, 2019
"Storm Boy" wants to be a high-flying inspirational tale, but its wings are clipped by bad storytelling.
| Original Score: C | Apr 5, 2019
The stylish visuals and alternately silly and poignant boy-and-bird sequences help an otherwise predictable story take flight.

I confess I have never been a big fan of films involving kids and animals bonding, but even I will admit that as long as Storm Boy sticks to this particular path, it is uncommonly good.

It feels honest and alive, however modestly so.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 5, 2019
Storm Boy tells a familiar, but endearing tale
| Original Score: B- | Apr 5, 2019
At once uplifting and melancholic, it's the right "Storm Boy" for our turbulent times.
