Stowaway Reviews

Apr 11, 2025

The logic at the beginning of the story makes the entire movie useless. There was no comeback in the ending to makeup for a bad overall movie.

A space station built to travel back and forth to a colony on mars has a critical failure after the discovery of a 4th person on board. Sounds interesting until you realize that for some reason nobody thought preparing for a situation with reduced oxygen would be a good idea.....that's it...that's the whole problem....they've managed to colonize mars but haven't figured out that space is dangerous. They didnt think having an extra O2 scrubber on board or extra oxygen might be beneficial. I am baffled at the laziness of Hollywood. We keep spare tires in our cars for crying out loud.

The movie is just riddled with weird, strange and stupid decisions, the director is obviously a complete novice! And the ending, what in the world! Nothing like having zero conclusion to a movie you’ve invested 2 hours in! Ridiculous. Bummer cause the premise is cool. Don’t waste 2 hours on this one.

While not an Alien level film, I thought it was better than a 3 star. Easily a 4 star movie! Good story and a good ending.

The film had a little promise at the start but quickly descends into monotony.....none of the characters impose themselves and you have no empathy with any character, quite frankly if they all died from radiation you wouldn't lose any sleep.....avoid like the plague.

Stowaway had a solid premise, but it didn’t quite reach its full potential. The story is simple but could have been executed better. The tension is there, and the stakes are high, but a lot of moments feel forced rather than naturally unfolding. It also has some pacing issues, making it feel slower than it needed to be. The moral dilemma at the core is interesting, but the depth of the story doesn’t hit as hard as it should. The directing is fine, nothing too special, but the cinematography and CGI are where things fall short. With the entire movie taking place on the spaceship, the visuals needed to feel immersive, but they just don't. The ship itself doesn’t look as real as it should, making some scenes feel like they’re missing that extra layer of realism. That being said, the performances were good. The cast did their job well, bringing emotion into the story, but even with solid acting, the script felt a bit weak. Some dialogue and situations felt unnatural, like they were trying too hard to create drama. The sound design and score are decent, nothing that really stands out, but they do their job in setting the tone. It feels like a lower-budget film compared to other space movies, and that shows in both the production and execution. It had potential to be something more intense and thought-provoking but didn’t quite get there. Not a bad watch if you like slow-burn space dramas, but it’s not one that leaves a lasting impact.

Decent movie, but so frustrating to watch. Classic case of logical thinking vs emotional thinking. The answer to the “problem” in this movie is clear as day, yet we have to watch Anna Kendrick play a character whose emotions are so strong they blind her from the logical solution. It’s frustrating watching it play out. There’s also some really obvious common sense issues- such as not being tethered to the spacecraft while out space walking… and bringing in a METAL oxygen tank into a ship after it’s been through a deadly solar storm and obviously radioactive (for probably a thousand years). The pacing of the movie is uneven and made me want to fast forward several parts- although I didn’t.

Movies like this terrify me.

I wrote reviews for this movie but it got deleted after RT got bought by Fandango. I don't remember what I wrote, nor this movie so it must not have been that great. I recall it not being realistic.

The movie was good but the ending ( if you can even call it an ending ) kind of ruined it for me as I think they goofed up with the whole story. So they venture out to go get more oxygen from that capsule at the end of the pole arm things sticking way out. But then they have to hurry back suddenly when an alarm sounds warning of an oncoming solar storm. So they barely make it back in time to the main cabin, and lose the oxygen in the process. So she goes back out to get more oxygen from the leaking tank in the solar storm. So why did they even bother returning the first time? It made no sense to me whatsoever. I can believe some producers and directors sat there and ok’d this in the story line. Ummmm hello??? Maybe watch your own movie before releasing it for everyone to watch. I will say that Anna Kendrick is a kick ass actress. I love her. So that made it worth it for me. Toni Collette as well. In fact all the acting was really good. It would have made a much better and more satisfying film if they had just got the oxygen back and saved everyone. Then continued on and at least showed them approaching Mars. Why do they always have to end these movies badly

Had a lot of promise in the beginning, flawed by a low budget, a poor understanding of science (no tethers for spacewalk?) and an absolutely terrible ending that makes zero logical sense and probably cost the movie millions in revenue

Decent space flick if you're desperately craving a space flick.

While beautifully filmed and well acted, this movie has pacing issues that make it tedious. I say skip it unless you just want to watch it for the visuals knowing you’re going to see a long, sad moral dilemma that comes from a highly unlikely premise.

Beautiful epic space images, but only the old narrative (too little oxygen, dramatic rescue operation, (requested) willingness to make sacrifices). Unfortunately, not much new here, certainly no new questions.

Oct 19, 2024

While it presents an interesting moral dilemma, the journey to it's conclusion is rather mundane and lacking any sort of suspense.

The human drama is engaging, if a little slow paced, but the crisis and solution to it are just completely implausible. One modest hand portable oxygen tank is simply insufficient to sustain anyone for any great length of time and even if it was, there is no urgency about retreiving it that necessitates a spacewalk during a solar storm.

Sep 7, 2024

The movies climax makes no sense. There was more than enough time to retrieve the air once astablished it was there and enough. No need to hurry and make mistakes let alone sacrifice someone

A sci-fi drama that makes you feel like you are about to choose to live or not.

This has to be one of the absolutely most ridiculous concepts for a movie ever. A mechanical engineer, working for a space program SOMEHOW gets knocked unconscious, hanging in a spaceship & is discovered after lift off? The sheer absurdity of this explanation: "I must have got knocked out." For how long? Being "knocked out & waking up somewhere else" is a horrible trope used constantly in mysteries. People don't get knocked out for extended periods of time in like 99% of cases. He's in an enclosed space. How was he not accounted for? He has a *** sister & co-workers who would have been like... "uh yo. Our friend hasn't been around. Last seen at work. You know... in a spaceship." It's not like a mechanical engineer is on board the craft minutes before lift off. I thought, maybe, he intentionally stowed away (which by the now that I think about it, he'd have been absolutely shredded from the lift off, not being buckled in) stating his dream was to be on the next flight, but the writer has said straight up, "Nope. Is just an accident." Stupid. Not believable. Even Anna Kendricks outstanding charisma & hilarity can't save this piece of junk.

Very well made. Also very slow and sad. Just not that enjoyable for me personally. Ignoring the reviewers who clearly don't understand the artificial gravity/spinning, my big complaint is how a technician got stuck behind a wall panel and no one at NASA noticed.
