This is an extraordinary movie, superbly acted. The direction is original and plunges you right away into a fascinating and believable dystopia. Bravo!

An underrated gem of a movie which didn't get the love it deserved on its theatrical release. Beautifully directed, wonderful performances, excellent story and a killer soundtrack. Loved this movie on its release and having recently rewatched it, it's even better than I remembered it. Fantastic.

There are some strange days ahead, so be prepared for what's to come! Lenny Nero is a former cop in a futuristic society where he sells bootlegged memories for the highest bidder, only to get entangled in a disturbing mystery when he receives a memory implant of a brutal murder that sends him throughout the seedy underground of his city along with his personal bodyguard. With some impressive cinematography and an intriguing plot line, this cult classic manages to stay on our minds like a memory we just can't erase!

Angela Bassett has never been better.

This film kicks ass! Pretty ahead of its time. It's even a little prophetic and very intelligent. Ralph Fiennes is one of the GOATS in acting. Angela Bassett was great too. If you like Sci-Fi dystopian futuristic stuff, you should give it a whirl. Rating: 8/10

Strange yes but I never found it interesting.

The writing is not great and I think it's the worst flaw of this movie. But the idea itself is interesting, the social critique about police corruption and racism is interesting and the final result is, overall, a very entertaining movie. Many things are dated and some scenes are kinda slow but it's worth a watch. Angela Bassett's character is absolutely iconic and Juliette Lewis gives one of the best musical performance I've ever heard (her PJ Harvey's song cover is seriously amazing). Young Ralph Fiennes even does his best. Maybe it's not the best '90 cyberpunk movie but it's unique in its own way.

This movie holds up surprisingly well after almost 30 years. Typical over-the-top 90s writing, Michael Wincott's trope-y permabrood, Julliete Lewis' bad, scream-y acting can't weigh down Basset, Fiennes and Sizemore's great performances. Fun seeing a young D' Onofrio deliver so perfectly - as he always does - his unique, trademark psychotic villainy as well. The movie is a classic in the cyberpunk genre, at a time when we stood at the edge of the last bit of crumbling ground not yet consumed by the information age and imagined the worst. Some truly and sadly-prophetic moments. The line about 5th graders shooting each other. The riots following the rapper's death eerily foretelling the 2020 riots following George Floyd's murder. Instead of sensory headsets we got twitter and tiktok, but the outcome is largely the same - a society living vicariously through others' experiences - not here and there with the purposeful intent of "wiring in" - but always on, always connected via the devices we endlessly gaze into.

A very good sci-fi film that was ahead of its time. Its no Blade Runner, but its definitely a worthwhile watch.

I just feel that it's just way too longer than it's supposed to be, maybe 90min. Fear for the millennium, and we are still struggling and having fear now (2023). The context is still relevant though it looks terribly aged. Kathryn Bigelow did a good job and there were her then husband Ridley Scott in the background. Another example Ralph Fiennes can do anything and this is a rare role for him I think.

An under-rated movie that needs to be available to buy on digital.

It's too long and the sci-fi is so under-used. Also where is the mistery?

Kathryn Bigelow is some director. It could well be argued that no film maker has captured the Iraq war so nail bitingly (The Hurt Locker [2008]) the hunt for Osama Bin Laden so honestly (Zero Dark Thirty [2012]) or perfected the extreme sports thriller so brilliantly (Point Break, [1991]). I haven't yet seen Near Dark (1987) so I can't comment on her take on the vampire genre, but I did see her dystopian sci-fi thriller Strange Days this week, which I've barely seen mentioned anywhere. Although it is too long, Strange Days' world building, premise, and execution is enormously impressive. There are clear influences from Blade Runner for example, but Strange Days lays down its own; it's obvious that Charlie Brooker has delved into this for Black Mirror, Duncan Jones' Mute (2018) nods to it as well, amongst many others. Ralph Fiennes is brilliant, of course, in the main role of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who is now in the trade of selling of virtual reality recordings that allows the buyer to experience the past memories of others. After he receives a recording showing a murder, he enlists the help of a friend and a bodyguard to track down the killer. As I said, the world building is exceptional, and setting it on the eve of the millennium celebrations adds a layer of technological edge to it, with people throughout the film referring to the end of the world and the millennium bug. This is well worth your time, if you can track it down.

I really liked this movie. When it came out, virtual reality was in its infancy being an idea spurred by the holodeck of Star Trek more than anything else. What was unique about the idea in Strange Days wasn't putting yourself in different worlds and going on adventures, but experiencing the emotions and tactile senses of a real person and this hadn't been discusses much in conjunction with virtual reality. It was a new concept. Adding the cyberpunk and noir atmosphere to the movie really boosted the feel of it. Definitely has a Blade Runner vibe, but not as good as since Blade Runner has Noe Los Angeles as it's own character in the film and the costuming and world design is higher. But if you are looking for a little known science fiction movie that is thought provoking without being too heavy, you should give it a try.

This would get a better review if the ending climax didn't almost wash away all the political commentary that existed in the first half (saying this without spoilers), but regardless It's been a long favorite of mine and still holds up in many ways.

Very interesting scenario, I feel like it could've been pushed a bit more, still great movie.
