Strange World Reviews
Everyone is delightfully lost in a softly Lovecraftian Osmosis Jones labyrinth with climate change overtones and lovely faceless critters everywhere, trying to pantomime meaning to these stumbling humans.

Strong familial conflict, magical adventures and timely social messaging make this animated feature a bit deeper than most. If Strange World can find its audience, those viewers will be pleased. Why? Because even the trees are cool!

Despite the film's rich CGI, it’s only when the humans and their conflicts, big and small, come to the forefront, that the film comes to life.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 29, 2022
The director Don Hall and his co-director and screenwriter Qui Nguyen seem to have put all of their effort into gaudy backgrounds, wacky gadgets and strange ancillary monsters instead of into dramatic urgency or conflict.

So much of Strange World’s audaciousness is front-loaded into its concept, and so little of it comes through in the execution.

Why isn’t this an out-and-out recommendation? It nearly merits that, but the tangled environmental allegory winds up being a royal headache.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 25, 2022
Hall and Nguyen deliver these messages with the subtlety of a wrecking ball, but the excellent voice-over work plus the score by Henry Jackman make the preachiness palatable and the film fun.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 24, 2022
It’s Disney riffing in ways that are reminiscent of The Emperor’s New Groove and Lilo & Stich, making this Journey to the Center of the Earth-style adventure a visually imaginative treat the whole family is certain to enjoy.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 24, 2022
Strange World breezes through a checklist of formulaic plot points and canned emotional revelations with enough style and sensitivity to make it work.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 23, 2022
A rewarding continuation of the studio's recent narrative fascination with overcoming divides rather than evil.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 23, 2022
Strange World has the makings of a fun, pulpy adventure story, and it is, but much of the plot is bogged down in strange, unfunny dialogue and a needlessly complicated storyline.

Energies have been focused on the visuals, and they make the experience worthwhile. That, and an appealing collection of human characters that look a lot more like the real world than usually seen in these films.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 23, 2022
The visual beauty of the film isn’t enough. After all, pretty is as pretty does — and in “Strange World,” pretty doesn’t do much.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 23, 2022
There's a lot of plot in "Strange World," which takes too long to get moving as a result. But the good news is that the characters are lively enough to keep us interested.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 23, 2022
Strange World feels like a new iteration of Disney, one that is more thoughtful and inclusive without sacrificing any of the humor or fun.
| Original Score: B+ | Nov 23, 2022
It’s no Encanto, but the family-friendly fun fest offers plenty of ingenious visuals and upbeat messaging.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 23, 2022
The takeaway is the difficulty of collaboration in the face of entrenched beliefs and ways of navigating the world that, ultimately, must be questioned — if not entirely dismantled — if any one of us expects to stick around.

A sweet, science-fiction family film with a loud environmentalist message that’s good fun.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 22, 2022
The uneasy marriage of clunky psychodrama and overwrought special effects along with the fact that none of these characters are particularly likable make “Strange World” a chore to sit through.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 22, 2022
Kids will love its primary-coloured wonderland that teems with weird and wonderful beasts, and only the stoniest-hearted grown-up won’t be moved by its inclusive celebration of family across generations.
