Summer '03 Reviews

Sep 25, 2021

I really enjoyed this movie. It was cute and funny, with a bit of serious thrown in. Not sure it sets a good example for teenagers, but it is probably realistic like it or not.

It's good well written

Dreamy but overrated.

So boring I did not finish it. Hilarious? Hardly. Not even a chuckle.

The movie does not look RIGHT!!!!!!! The characters had no type of human emotion or expression other than the emotion you put poorly reading a book for kids. Also, the dialogue sounded like it was LITERALLY taken word per word from the original novel. It felt super old fashioned and even faked. The shots were WEIRD, giving a wanna-be "twilight vibe" without the cool tone filter and stable camera work; it looked unimaginative and boring. Adding more fire to the flame, the main character looked like a thirteen-year-old wearing what a college student would wear to a party FOR CHURCH. I don't know if that was just to be comedic or to protests and offend the church, but it was AWKWARD and I am not religious at all. It feels like they were trying too hard to make a funny and emotional movie but FAILED and fell on their own butts. Only 40 minutes in and I want to cry. Also, all the actors looked like pre or early teens so they seemed out of place most of the time, like when kids play pretend and dress up like their parents. I had Dylans' voice, from Dylan is in trouble, in my head all the time while watching the movie. I hope he comments this trash in Until I Hate Myself because I definitely hated myself for even watching a second of this sh*t.

In the warm glow of a not-so-long-ago summer 16 year old Jamie is tasked by her grandmothers final words to "learn how to give a good blowjob", sending her off onto a journey of sexual and self-understanding and exploration. Beyond the surface level of Jamie's goal to fuck the almost priest is her need to be loved by the people in her life. A genre usually reserved for Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill is embraced by a young Joey King who gives the film heart beneath its raunchy exterior.

Joey King really sells this film which could have easily been a horrible film lacking in every way.

I was expecting more about this film, i think the principal plot was very interesting but as the movie went by it started loosing that spark that made you watch it in the first place.

Because it was a Debut from Writer/Director Becca Gleason it's Ok that it's not a Fantastic Film, because it was as I said a Debut, but it still is a solid Coming of Age Film with a good Leading Performance by Joey King. Nothing more has to be said. RATING: 2.7

it really pissed me off in so many ways

Some pretty deep flaws, but when it's good it really nails it. The lead character is the highlight, and the many inconsistencies of her surrounding characters are the detractors taking the edge off what could've been spectacular. Enjoy the good elements.

Strengths: This movie does a terrific job in capturing the teen coming of age story. Itâ(TM)s not new territory, but it is the execution that helps this stand out. The inappropriate and rude grandmother sets everything in motion and it all works. Joey King (Jamie) gives the best performance of her young career. She is taken on a journey that tests her friendships and romances, while also putting up with her impossible family. She makes some terrible teenage decisions, yet sheâ(TM)s never unlikable. The bond she has with her cousin is strong. She has solid chemistry with Logan Medina (Dylan) and you believe their relationship. Paul Scheer (Ned) and Andrea Savage (Shira) were both fun in their roles as the parents. The movie also does a good job showcasing the time period. It feels like 2003, from the technology to the soundtrack to the outfits. Weaknesses: For being a teen comedy, this movie lacks some laughs. I canâ(TM)t recall a standout line, scene or moment that made me even chuckle. There are some moments that are a bit too awkward to really click the way it needed to. I understand that awkwardness is a part of this time in your life, but sometimes it doesnâ(TM)t make for good entertainment. The third act does get a bit messy as the movie probably tries too much to give us a fun conclusion. Overall: This was a surprisingly fun piece of 2018. Itâ(TM)s a solid coming of age story featuring good performances and giving us something of a unique take.

Movie is definitely reflects what we experienced in 16-18 y.o. Camera work is brilliant, i enjoyed it. Script is also so good that i really didnt want to miss a word. I was hooked up when saw a trailer on iTunes where old lady gives a cold shower to her family. Highly recommend!

Look, Iâ(TM)m an admitted sucker for the quirky coming-of-age sub-sub-genre, so this film came with built in points for me. If âGrandmother on death bed convinces young adult to give a priest a blowjobâ? sounds like a weird premise, it makes for an even weirder movie. That said, I actually found it charming and at times quite funny. It does - literally and figuratively - drive off the the road a bit in the third act but all in all, a fun flick. Joey King continues her march towards superstardom.

Actually the most boring movie I've seen in a long time. Not good enough to capture you, and not bad enough to entertain you.

Jan 9, 2019

While the final act goes a little messy, Summer '03 feels like a nicely put together teen comedy that shows a more direct approach in what teenagers are really into growing up.

Summer 03 was all over the place. The trailer doesn't make the movie seem better or worse than what it is, so if you like the trailer, you'll probably like this movie. Although the plot seems rushed at times or unrealistic, the characters don't. The characters are very realistic, and the main character plays her part well of being a typical teen who wants to experience life, follow her impulses, and be selfish. This movie is entertaining but forgettable.

Kept me laughing throughout. Irreverent at times but with a purpose. Well developed and written coming of age with unexpected moments throughout. Excellent cast, I highly recommend to anyone looking to laugh and think back to high school summers and the angst and joy of being a teen.
