Summer Palace Reviews
Hao Lei's performance is the most beautiful thing in this film to me.
I would ban this movie not because of its political view (because there was none), or because of the nudity content (there were lots of bad naked scenes). I would ban it because it's such a bad movie with lots of dialogue of the main character's inside voice. The movie might be better if it's on mute. They can also delete the epilogue on what happened to the main characters. Because frankly my dear, no one gives a d***. That's 2.5 hours I'm never going to get back.
Agonizingly slow, certainly weird, yet strangely artistic; great use of music and minimalist dialogue.
This movie, banned in China, may open with a declaration of a love story but I would like to see it as a mood piece that probably captures the milieu of the students ensnared in the tragic Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. In an era of where conservatism and liberalism clash, the students' long-repressed raw desires, worldly frustration and sadomasochism erupt like the gunfires on the streets.
The whole atmosphere is quite similar to that documentary Tian An Men's last 20 minutes; some scenes even imitated it directly.
A nice movie about a girl trying to find herself. Yu Hong leaves the province for Beijing to study and find her own way. She finds herself lost in the turbulence of the political events and her own not less worrying emotions. As the time goes on, she looks for happiness and has to give up her idealistic beliefs about love and life. Yet, when she seems to have found what she looked, she can't accept. A quite interesting coming-of-age movie that is not for the light-hearted because it does everything but give optimism. It has its flaws but does exceptionally well at making you feel with the lead character.
One of the best movies in 2006. Hao Lei is impressing, talented actress. In the end of film reminded me of the something like Kieslowski.

one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. Yeah its a bit on the long side, but its the only way to get lost in the story. Strong performances. Thought about this movie for weeks after watching it.
Youthful, sexy, and raw with a subversive political edge. Summer Palace is smarter than your average coming-of-age drama or eroto-thriller.
A bit sensational but very sincere film that directly touches your heart. In terms of both technique and content, this is a milestone of the 6th generation Chinese directors' films.
Revolving around the Beijing youth amidst the political happenings over the year, this would have been a great film if not for the gratuitous sex scenes every now and then!
Hmmm. It's not my cup of tea, but I think it's a good movie. I expected to see more about Tiananmen Square incident, but it's more about young love and their later life.
Summer Palace a Chinese movie that caught my attention from the moment it started on my screen.A young girl encountered her first experiences with love and sex. The movie showed huge changes China was undergoing in the mid-eighties.She was excepted at university in Beijing and met a guy who she fell madly in love with. The acting directing, editing, photography all was very breathtaking. The story was heartbreaking as we followed these 2 student during the protests and how they lost sight of each other and lived separate lives.Sex was an important part of the movie, since it expressed passion, but still it did not have a happy ending and it had a message that you have to discover by thinking and feeling the movie. (***): Thumbs Up An interesting and well-acted film that only suffers because it is overlong and confusing at times. Still, it is worth seeking out.
