Sunset Reviews
Stripped of life-and-death consequences, Sunset never convinces us that its protagonist can sustain such unrelenting scrutiny.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Dec 2, 2020
Instead, this feels like an abstract ode to the frantic, listless, tightly wound thing a city becomes on the eve of its demise.

Sunset is one of the most innovative and invigorating films I've seen, and I can't imagine that anything else this year could have topped it.

It's all too vague to function effectively as either a commentary on the build-up to the Great War or as the story of a woman looking to find her place in a city predicated on rigid, gender-determined hierarchies.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 1, 2019
Nothing is ever quite clear - often literally, because Nemes likes to keep the middle-distance out of focus. It was chillingly effective in Son of Saul. Here it's just deadening.
| Original Score: 2/5 | May 31, 2019
A thing to be admired and puzzled over, featuring fantastic feats of millinery. Magic and hats, anyone?
| Original Score: 5/5 | May 31, 2019
At no point does any character own their behaviour in any consistent or recognisably human way.
| May 30, 2019
Maybe doesn't amount to much, but it's compelling as all hell, and Juli Jakab is a major find.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 30, 2019
All the good intentions in the world can't compensate for an audience's alienation, and with nothing to sustain the suspense from one scene to the next, it dwindles away after an hour.

I won't be deterred from believing that Nemes is a genius of some kind.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 29, 2019
This is an immersive drama that held me spellbound for all 142-minutes of is sprawling, singularly focused narrative...
| Original Score: 4/4 | Apr 21, 2019
Perhaps Nemes was hoping to let the precision of his intricately staged images artfully clash with the absurdity of a chaotic plot. But the result is more tedious than tense.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 4, 2019
Oblique, often beguiling, and portentously cryptic, the film offers no satisfying solution.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 4, 2019
If Sunset doesn't hit with nearly the impact that Son of Saul does, this look back at the chaos before the storm establishes Nemes as a major voice.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 27, 2019
Nemes adds distinctive but superfluous flourishes to this meticulous, overcalculated historical drama.
| Mar 25, 2019
Sunset is suspenseful and absorbing, if also repetitive and, at 140 minutes, a bit overlong.
| Mar 23, 2019
Nemes' suggestive, impressionistic approach takes some getting used to, but Sunset is worth the extra effort.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Mar 22, 2019
Approach as you would an impressionist painting.
| Mar 22, 2019
Nemes can be relentlessly opaque, which at time makes the film a drag to follow. But there's method in his determination to leave us with nowhere to park our own affinities.
| Mar 21, 2019
"Sunset" is maddening and mesmerizing.
