Super Dark Times Reviews
Amazing films, everything about it is great, especially the atmosphere
How can you expect to maintain your innocence in a world where darkness is around us! As three friends end up committing a horrible act, they struggle to cover it up with paranoia and guilt growing inside, threatening to swallow them whole. A compelling drama that manages to leave you with a sick feeling in your stomach as these kids become killers!
An unsettling story with extraordinary acting by this young cast. The way these actors who were probably around 15/16 portrayed such authentic mannerisms and behaviors was striking. I often get distracted by overacting in big budget movies, it's always feels so forced but Phillips does a remarkable job with this crew to extract realistic reactions in the face of chaos.
This film is a perfect representation of this era, culturally: it's got a gorgeous shiny exterior but no substance inside. The actors were all interesting enough and talented, but they had nothing to work with and thus looked confused a lot of the time. "What's my motivation?" The director: "Well gosh, your guess is as good as mine! Just go with it!" The plot made no sense. The characters were muddled and erratic. For example, one second, two infatuated teenagers with probably (hopefully) extremely limited experience, are having an Age of Innocence-level romantic moment, and in a later scene they're fumbling around like we expect they would have to start with. My question is, why do the characters do literally everything they do? The writer/director might have answers, but they're not anywhere to be found in the film itself. Good soundtrack though.
I first watched this movie 3 years ago and it still remains as my favorite movie of all time. A nonstop recommendation from me!
Saw this on the recommendations of the critics but found it to be a movie that starts with promise but by it's final act has become rather disappointing.
This movie is incredibly dark and will stay with you long after it ends.
super good indie flick with an escalating end. good midwest emo vibes
The times were super dark indeed. While a simple plot on the surface, this one was genuinely unsettling in a way that films often miss the mark on - it maintained an air of believability. A classic tale of trouble going from bad to worse to catastrophic unfolds along the worst possible path. Super Dark Times is as difficult of a watch as it is worth watching.
I can't believe this movie has the rating it has. The acting is wooden, the story is laughable, and the ending tries to be clever but is just disappointing. The connection to the 90s is tenuous, the "atmosphere" that critics cite is just the inclusion of some synths--which is more 80s aesthetic than 90s. I cringed a lot during this film--the most 90s thing about it is bad actors playing navel-gazing teens who have trouble communicating, often just staring at each other. Great job guys.
"Super Dark Times" is well-directed, well-acted, and well-filmed, but ultimately, it's just a teen slasher flick with pseudo-artistic pretentions. After the horrifying last act, I tried to figure out what the filmmaker's point was. I decided that he didn't have a point. He was just trying to shock and disturb--kind of like teenagers do. I can't think of any good reason to watch this movie. Sorry.
zzzzzzz....oh hello....two events in this movie; the first 30 minutes in and the last at the end. In between, unsympathetic teens whining about coming of age. Enjoy. Oh, but if your a critic paid to make reviews, this is effing brilliant.
A bit baffling at times but overall a gripping and tense film. You really feel the uncertainty of the characters as they traverse normal life after something traumatic. I find the pacing a little awkward, as the second act slowed things down so much I struggled to believe it'd find its feet again, but the third act is such a frenetic and hurried affair that you can largely forgive for its earlier tedium.
Slow build-up that doesn't really go in the direction that's expected. I'm not really sure I'd classify this as horror... plays more like a perverted PSA against drugs. When you think back to the first scene, the movie really makes no f'ng sense whatsoever. Maybe it is better than I'm giving it credit for but I found it in the horror section... and it's not.
Everything about this movie is incredible, from the dark themes to the cinematography. Debatably the best movie I've ever seen.
Ok, so, the first time i saw this, i had an enormousnhit of nostalgia for the 00's and vhs tapes, the shots are great, the storyline is better, and if you happen to catch yourself asking "what would i do if i was in that situation", you would get owerwhelmed with tension and stress, there are some flaws, but they are so easy ro forget when you start watching the movie. Overall its great, heck, its even a must see, you wont regret your time.
