Superfly Reviews
I’ll say this about X’s blaxploitation update-It’s a solid action film with a concise point of view.

SuperFly is a moderately flashy, mostly fun update of its 46 year old source material but also a reminder of how little has changed in that time.

Director X knows how to make a film look impressive and beautifully composed, but he seems lost when it comes to working with actors. The ingredients for a much better film are all there on screen, but nothing quite hits the way it should.

The film also contains great work from supporting actors and fun cameos by musical artists such as Rick Ross, which imparts the Atlanta setting with an interesting mix of street authenticity and outlandish fantasy.

It just goes to show if you're going to remake a blaxploitation movie, it's best to temper that revolutionary edge with the right amount of pulp. SuperFly doesn't get that balance quite right, but it comes a lot closer than one would expect.
| Original Score: 2.75/5 | Jul 17, 2019
It's definitely slick and stylish, directed by noted music video auteur Director X from a script by Alex Tse, but it lacks some of the soul that made the original film so engaging and fun.

SUPERFLY turns out to not be very good. Despite boasting a director whose name screams, "TOO MUCH STYLE," the film looks generic as can be.

Profoundly sketchy, scattershot and overall unappealing in its uneven boisterous presentation, Superfly aimlessly pounds its congested chest without offering any grounded payoff in redemption or retaliation.

The super heroic version of this tale mythologizes Youngblood Priest in a new era of chaos in which threats to the black community are more amorphous and multi-faceted than they used to be.

Like watching a two-hour trap video, this Superfly is all foreplay and zero climax. [Full Review in Spanish]

In any case, those shortcomings never take away from the heart of Jackson's performance, which, despite all the ethnic stereotypes seizing in the background, is saying something.

The clothes are great. The cribs are well-appointed. The fight sequences, although too few, are nicely choreographed. Yet none of it seems to coalesce into a movie.

[This remake is] in the style of one of those controversial 'gangsta rap' music videos that celebrate criminal wealth, gun violence and the sexual objectification of women. Doesn't really chime with the times, does it?
| Original Score: 1/5 | Sep 17, 2018
Director X...can't seem to differentiate between the strip-club aesthetics of a rap video and the demands of a full-length feature film.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Sep 14, 2018
An unlikable misfire of a film, with only a few decent performances on hand to make it worth your while.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 13, 2018
The early scenes are so full of bling and macho posturing that you half suspect the film must be intended as a spoof.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 12, 2018
The aesthetic may have changed with the passing decades, but this superfly guy remains the man of the hour.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 10, 2018
The message is outdated.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 6, 2018
What this film lacks in originality, it makes up for in zest.
| Original Score: B | Aug 28, 2018
Superfly wants to bank off the title of a genre classic without keeping the spirit of the genre alive. It needs more verve than gloss and more brains than bullets.
