Synecdoche, New York Reviews

Mar 14, 2025

It is of course a well achieved movie, but it is depressing, confusing, tedious and boring. I think the idea is interesting, but it could only appeal to someone who has not figured out a few things about life and consciousness yet. I believe it tries to represent the mystery of life and finding one's purpose, but it is just the life of anyone who is under the imaginary laws of modern society.

A sometimes haunting and horrifying study of mortality, Synecdoche, New York shows all of Charlie Kaufman's strengths in a beautifully ambitious way. Though Phillip Seymour Hoffman has a great performance in this, the real star of the film is Kaufman's enthralling writing and entirely unique surrealist ideas and his perfectly cold direction. This is a haunting epic that won't be leaving my head anytime soon, and a must-watch for any Kaufman fans.

A very unique and hypnotic deconstruction of the artistic projection that so many storytellers attempt to find meaning and specialty from their lives into their fictional work, highlighted by the character’s life becoming directionless and therefore his play becomes directionless as the passage of time blurs the line, his health declines, and his passions & personal connections slowly fade away. It’s a very tedious and incoherent movie, but that’s the point to get across how disappointing life can feel sometimes when our lifelong hurdles still challenge us years later. It’s a challenging film to watch, but I was never lost on the main themes of the story or the emotions of the characters. You get a real feel for the characters’ depression and existential anxieties. How everything you once love and what made you feel special can often slowly erode away from the sands of time. It’s far from my favorite Charlie Kaufman film, but it’s easily his most ambitious, devastating, and self-reflective piece of work (even more than Adaptation!). I don’t exactly have a huge desire to rewatch it out of entertainment value, but certainly for another dissection at this man’s shattered psyche of human and artistic purpose when we’re given such a short timespan here on Earth.

As close to a perfect film as a film can get.

Though this film is incredibly well acted, I am personally not a big fan of it. I love Charlie Kaufman's writing. Adaptation is one of my all-time favorite films. As his career progressed, his films seemed to get more and more abstract. This one in particular had such a melancholy nature, it just did not appeal to me. I just couldn't connect with it. I love films that are abstract, so long as I have some kind of connection to the material or if I can somehow make sense of it. It seems to me that Charlie Kaufman has taken his abstractions too far, almost for the sake of it. Like, the intention is more so to be weird and different than to tell a real story. That's just my opinion. I don't find this film to be some brilliant allegory. I do find meaning to the film, I just find it to be unnecessarily abstract for effect. Again, I am just not a fan nor do I consider this picture to be great. Personally, I hate this film. There is just nothing for me to like about it. I do, on the other hand, appreciate the film. I would still recommend it to others. 72/100

The struggle for life of a director abandoned by his wife and children is interesting

I am very happy that the movie shows us the steps and choices that are necessary in the life of a great person. I like the movie.

Tediously, melancholically torturous, but that’s always been Charlie Kauffman’s aim, focusing on bloomy realism in his directorial debut after writing previous existential crises that manifested into a complex, heavy-handed discourse. Whilst deepens as poetically depressing and agreeably well-performed, the thematic confrontation genuinely struggles to connect, which therefore dissuades little enjoyment down to none besides artistic admiration. "I'm just concerned by dying in the fire" La vida de un hombre frustrado al pasar de los años. Surreal. Madura.

A confused, confusing, philosophical, self-indulgent puzzle of a film.

You really need to pay attention to every scene in this movie, and that’s not to say that it’s only a movie for cinephiles. It’s just that every scene has meaning and emotion and some scenes are very short - so short that if you go to the bathroom, you will probably be lost when you come back. It says that it’s a Comedy/Drama but I don’t see that at all. This is a psychological horror movie that really makes you feel like a depressed theatre director that watches their life flash before their eyes while feeling completely powerless. It makes you feel sadness, anxiety, powerless… it makes you feel like you haven’t done enough. I give it 4.5/5 because this movie is in the same category as Basketball Diaries and Requiem For A Dream - I can only watch them once because of how powerful they are.

The script is a mess.

Oof, that's a big set. Synecdoche, New York is a very interesting film for a reason. As it's a quite accurate portrayal of time in the perspective of a person. That's what I like most as you never really see films about how time flies and someone aging considerably. Also it's quite depressing with time, which is even more accurate to a point where nothing matters after decades of work. Acting wise, come on, it's the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman! He's always been such a gifted actor and it's sad he died 10 years ago. Also top supporting cast from all 7 actresses, you can't really knock it in that category. As beautiful as the film is there is one problem; "IT'S SO HARD TO FOLLOW!!!" I know that is the point as time passes really fast for him but it's so quick that one blink and you will miss like 2 scenes!!! Overall it is a really good film, one of the best of the 2000s but you really need to pay attention or there will be a glaring nail jutting out. Then the only way to slam that nail is with a hammer to keep it down then you can enjoy. Grade: A

I've bought at least two dozen copies of this film to give to friends and colleagues. Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze were hired to "make a horror film". Kaufman's response was to write a transcendent though anxiety-inducing postmodern existential horror film. Phillip Seymour Hoffman shined in this film. Samantha Morton and Michelle Williams were outstanding. "You only see a tenth of what is true. There are a million little strings attached to every choice you make. You can destroy your life every time you choose.". The f-monologue was written on-set by Charlie Kaufman and it is too much, too bright, too powerful.

It is definitely original, quite philosophical and mind bending. However, at the end, it seems that you were woven with an extreme amount of unnecessary complexity and you just do not even try to understand, and appreciate it as a surreal work of art.

Like most things involving Kaufman, this movie is impossible to predict. At times it can be hard to connect with movie, and while Seymour Hoffman is as captivating as ever, this is one of Kaufman's weaker effort

Hoffman (and all the others) are pretty excellent in Synecdoche. He's a troubled writer that has a life going down the tube all the while trying to express and create in the theater. It's a brain bender as far as who is play what role at times, but if you can hang on til the ending - you'll be rewarded.

Life is looking pretty bleak for theater director Caden Cotard. His wife and daughter have left him and Caden leaves his home in Schenectady, New York, and heads to New York City, where he gathers a cast of actors and tells them to live their lives within the constructs of a mock-up of the city. One day later and I am still in shock of this movie, what an experience this was. The movie starts relatively normal and I thought it was going to be a good straight forward movie, but when he starts to write his play, about himself, the movie becomes so interesting. The movie feels complex and hard to understand, but on the other hand its one you can you easily follow, if you pay a lot of attention. I was shocked to find out, that Philip Seymour Hoffman didn't get any awards love, only because it came out in the beginning of the year, because this is his finest performance to date, he was incredible in the role. The screenplay and editing are perfection and the story is always developing in an interesting way. The way that Charlie Kaufman developed the play of his own life, was so great, to the point that you didn't even know, what was the play and what is real life. It's definitely as well the type of movie, that is in need of a re watch, to fully understand what's the meaning behind all of it, but overall I think I got the message behind it all, but some of the structuring that is going on, definitely deserves a re watch someday, this is what we call perfection
