Tammy Reviews
Tammy is the slob comedy Alexander Payne is too dignified to write and direct.

Dead on arrival.

By the end of the credits Tammy doesn't feel like a comedy - although there are several giggles sprinkled throughout - as much as it does a waste of talent.

We've expected makeover narratives and personal-growth realizations from women on screen... in Tammy, we get a character - and her creator - patently uninterested in most of that journey. For Hollywood, that's radical.

What detracts from the merriment is the film's need to kowtow to morals and lessons that are both generic and too heavy for the eccentric characters.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Dec 4, 2020
It's a film that is constantly flirting with the idea that it's going to be something truly special and it just never gets there.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 25, 2020
McCarthy seems intent to repeat the trashy lass formula that's served her so well, but her eponymous protagonist grates rather than skates above the mediocrity of the material.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Aug 30, 2019
It must be said that hidden within Tammy is a feel-good comedy that is however smothered by the script falling back on the same old comedy chestnuts that clearly fall within McCarthy's comfort zone.

A comedy with intriguing elements around the edges, but ultimately falls flat because of its overbearing lead performance from McCarthy... The schtick grows old fast here.

Tammy is authentically entertaining and McCarthy and Sarandon are total queens and you'll fall in love.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 28, 2018
I call this a typical summer-house movie: films stars do because they fancy a fourth home in Napa.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Feb 21, 2018
Presumably to expand her (McCarthy's) repertoire, there is a deliberate attempt to cut down her sweat-slob persona and soften those rough edges to test new ground here that is akin to inventing a humanitarian nuclear bomb.

Only two people were asleep when I went to go see Tammy, but by the time I left, all of us were unconscious. Helpless dogs trapped in a dark purse of a movie.
| Original Score: C- | Aug 24, 2017
While the effort can be appreciated, the vehicle was running on fumes from the start.
| Original Score: D | Aug 17, 2017
In a word, it stinks.
| Aug 17, 2017
The plotline is simple and flexible enough to allow for lots of hilarious detours.
| Mar 8, 2017
The result is a sweet, often entertaining but occasionally uneven movie.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 12, 2016
It drags and it befuddles, but like most McCarthy properties, Tammy sings when she's onscreen. Worth the bumps.

'Tammy' is a disappointment, because it asks an energetic, unpredictable performer to play it so calculatingly, frustratingly safe.

Ultimately, the entire film plays like a 100-minute deleted scene - shaggy, formless, and voraciously inconsequential.
