Nothing Like a Dame Reviews

By the time the conversation turns to old age, with Smith offering her hearing aid to Plowright, it's clear that this is a historical record of a lost era. There's no time for melancholy, though. There's far too much giggling for that.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 13, 2025

The conversation sparkles but don't come looking for a timeline of their careers. Look instead for insight into lives lived on stage.

Tea is strictly lightweight, an opportunity to hang out with a few grande dames rather than any serious appreciation of their remarkable talents. It's a PBS Pledge Week kinda tribute, pleasing but weightless.

It's enjoyable watching them engage in witty banter but it's also fascinating seeing them talk about their prestigious careers. Have a sip of tea and enjoy!

I'm sure I will see better, more elaborately structured and edited documentaries this year than director Roger Michell's Tea with the Dames, but I doubt any will fill me with as much pure, elated joy.

[A] cozy nonfiction film.

As splendid as whisky in a teacup.

| May 24, 2019

The film also makes points - sometimes subtle, sometimes very frank - about the ways in which women, especially older women, are overlooked and underestimated.

Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith chat about their lives, their experience in theatre, 온라인카지노추천, film and the memories from when they were ingenues to their present golden years.

| Original Score: 10/10 | Mar 1, 2019

No one goes to a movie like this in order to bask in its visual opulence. No, they go to see four legends dish about their professional and personal lives and in that respect, it is undeniably entertaining.

| Feb 20, 2019

The real meat of the film is how respectfully it portrays their insane level of talent and knowledge and how refreshingly realistic it is in how it portrays their advanced age.

| Jan 11, 2019

The premise sounds like a bit of a snore. Four octogenarians get together at a quiet country estate. They have tea in the garden, then go into the house when it starts raining. The end. There's very little action. But there's plenty of drama.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Jan 2, 2019

This is for you if you enjoy gorgeous homes, crisp accents, and great pashminas during moments where Judi Dench has a reason to call herself a "menopausal dwarf" in the context of being cast to play a legendary beauty.

| Original Score: 97/100 | Dec 26, 2018

Do you need a life pick-me-up? The dames are here for you.

| Dec 26, 2018

Candid, insightful and unpredictable, Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Plowright and Dame Maggie Smith are not only acting legends but also great friends. And a treat to hang out with.

| Dec 26, 2018

A delightful, delicate, delicious crustless-finger-sandwich of a film...

| Dec 26, 2018

Tea With the Dames peters out as a conversation, given there's no real beginning, middle or end to the film. It's a privilege, however, to have been given a tableside seat to listen to this foursome reminisce and ruminate for an hour and a half.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 13, 2018

Their actual outsized personalities do not disappoint in this lively and intimate doc.

| Dec 6, 2018

It's not going to be a blockbuster and won't engage the majority of moviegoers, but for those it does, it's priceless.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 1, 2018

Gathered outdoors in Dame Joan's garden for a bit of a gossip and a stroll down memory lane, they entertain each other and the crew as well as us, then the rains come, driving them inside for a wee bit more. Here's a good one.
