Tetro Reviews
Coppola’s style is all cinema, switching from black and white to shocking color at opportune moments, and moving the camera around with controlled madness.

Tetro is worth your time, if only to see how Coppola is experimenting these days.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 18, 2023
The strength of TETRO- an imperfect film to be sure, but an admirable one - is that the movie is so recognizably from Francis Ford Coppola while nevertheless feeling new and even unrecognizable.

More than gets by on the strength of Coppola's ability to construct a visually arresting and compelling film even when the story and the dialogue border on uninteresting.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 26, 2020
Francis Ford Coppola shows here that he can, now in his 70s, make a movie with the same kind of youthful spirit of his past, but with the control and patience of a veteran filmmaker
| Original Score: A | Aug 13, 2020
Deeply personal yet utterly accessible, and with moments of laugh out loud humour mixed in with the Tennessee Williams-esque tension, Tetro is romanticism, comedy and drama wrapped up in one utterly sublime package.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 24, 2019
It's wonderful to see Mr. Coppola working from his own material again, although the results are uneven.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 6, 2018
A welcome return to some kind of form for the bearded behemoth.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 5, 2018
Watching Tetro, Coppola's first original screenplay in some 30 years, is like eavesdropping on someone's dream.

Tetro means "gloomy" in Italian, and sitting through this film is depressing indeed.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 4, 2018
The movie is befuddling, but not because of plot convolutions. It keeps you at a distance when it seems singly concerned with the particular plight of the "art family."

Tetro is an acquired taste.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 23, 2017
Coppola excels at what might be termed the cinema of inadequacy.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 2, 2011
It's a deeply personal picture that's overflowing with exuberance and passion and is the director's best work in over twenty years.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 8, 2010
There is not enough dramatic tension to sustain the film for two hours and conjectures about the Coppola family saga are really extraneous to the experience of Tetro.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 6, 2010
Funny, haunting, strange and striking in equal measure, Tetro is a triumph that reconfirms Francis Ford Coppola's position as one of the great American filmmakers...
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 6, 2010
A dazzling stylistic exercise, Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro pays tribute to great bygone European filmmakers.
| Jul 6, 2010
Unabashedly theatrical and richly cinematic, even when it's falling apart...

Shot mostly in a chiaroscuro black and white, with color interludes for the flashbacks and for surreal ballet sequences in the mode of Michael Powell's The Red Shoes, Tetro rewards the eye.
