Sometimes you just need a quiet movie to enjoy and this movie will do it for you.

I loved this movie! It’s for all ages, not just for kids.

This film captures the essence of Irish life alongside it's folklore.

As an Irish American who grew up watching this movie, it is so ridiculous and Irish. The grandpa literally spends half the movie just telling long stories about his ancestors, and there's a lot of superstition and praying… so it's definitely Irish AF. It's a movie with love to watch and make fun of. I'm sure it's fun to watch in earnest if you didn't grow up with it, but I just can't take seriously grown adults that just fully accept that a small child may be out there but don't look for him because "the sea has taken him". For that alone, it's hilarious.

Hate to be the bug in the soup but this was not well acted and the dialogue was stilted and pretty poor. It is definitely family friendly from a content standpoint but it does not hold up and doubt it will hold your attention.

A "child's tale" that's really better suited for patient adults. Some may find it slow paced and tedious. But the acting is top notch, the Irish cinematography beautiful, and the story a peak into Irish myths. Also, I'm a sucker for celtic music, and the soundtrack does not disappoint. Not sure I would return to it, but I'm glad I watched it.

Long and very boring. Stink, Stank, Stunk. I suffered through for my daughter's sake. She wanted to watch it. She was just a child and had no taste yet, so she picked this rotten tomato..

This movie is so beautiful with its setting, Irish myths/legends, and the story perfectly complement each other. It is such a heartwarming story, definitely a must-see.

I'd forgotten about this movie. We really enjoyed it. It made some idea that was unbelievable into something more believable.

There is certain simplicity about this film, gentle pacing and no special effects, just an everyday goings on of a girl as she explored her environment. An unfussy and uncomplicated fairy tale, about ordinary people. Nice music too

I thought it was nice story about Irish folklore and enjoyable for the family to watch

Daaw, Fiona's a little cutie pie. All this Irish folklore and stories are really interesting with the selkies and all that. Some of the editing in this movie is kind of off and odd, and the acting sometimes throws me off like the auditory recording of some of the actors dialogue is off. But other than that, I thought it was quite the charming and sweet little children's fable story even though parts of it were kind of weird. A tad bit too campy for my taste, but I get that it's more for children. I probably wouldn't watch it again, but it was a good movie.

Beautiful Irish fairy tale. Magical!

It won't jump into new territory, but the main child exploring Irish folklore is classy beach house nighttime entertainment for anyone that can appreciate youthful storytelling.

Beautiful and poetic fairy tale.

The Secret of Roan Inish is a fantasy set in the real world, and meant to be taken seriously. It is well-made and strange enough to be a memorable, stand-out film.

The Secret of Roan Inish is a pleasant film about a young girl who goes to live with her grandparents in a small town. Throughout her stay she is regaled with strange tales that seem to blend history with legend in a fantastical mix that kind of made my head spin. As she goes on to explore what truth lies within these fables, I was a bit confused. I had kind of assumed that everything was just tall tales designed to intrigue and entertain a child, but then we start finding some pieces of the stories were real. It was one of those situations where my logical mind kicked in a bit too much and became a detriment, because I was trying to figure out how these things were possible, when I think the film was simply asking me to let go and accept that not everything has to make perfect sense. The entire film has a very laidback feel to it. I never felt like there was much conflict or struggle, which isn’t a bad thing (not every film has to be an action blockbuster.) But this quality made The Secret of Roan Inish very relaxing, and therefore it made me a bit sleepy and easily distracted. It’s the kind of film that I wish I had seen as a young boy because I could see myself entirely enraptured by it and drawn into the magic of the story. There’s definitely something fascinating underlying this film, and the sense of magical realism should be a big selling feature for me. Yet for some reason I was never drawn into it as much as I would like. I have a sense that this might have just been the wrong time for me to watch The Secret of Roan Inish, and I need to watch it again when I can fully lock into the film and shut out all distractions. Even so, it was still a nice movie that made me feel good.

Blobbo love beautiful movie.

I found this movie to be a delightful surprise; it's remarkable how Sayles' direction believes in its own material--this is a real event, happening to real people--and accepts the myth on its own terms. The acting is better than I realized at first; with the characters' revelations toward the end coming as genuine experiences. My only quibble is with Sayles' usually clunky direction and editing; sometimes he's too literal in showing us what to see and believe, and doesn't leave enough room for mystic wonder to creep in. Fortunately this is countered by Haskell Wexler's remarkably beautiful and often subtle cinematography, which brings some of the images in at the limits of their visibility (but not nearly to the point of murkiness), making us work harder so that we really see and feel the sea, the light, the wet, and the story.
