The Assistant Reviews
Could have been so much better. We're left at the beginning. None the wiser.
TERRIBLE….i don’t understand how this is even a movie. Don’t waste 90 minutes of your life!
Turgid, slow, dull, #Me2 arthouse borefest. Shades of Jean Dielmann to it, which should never be considered a compliment. Bizarrely included in latest edition of 1001 movies to see before you die. Won’t be in future editions and will be quickly forgotten. Watched on DVD.
Despite the timeliness of the message, this is pretty underwhelming stuff. There is simply not enough substance or actual drama to constitute a satisfying movie. Jane, the main character, is played way too fragile and jittery to pass as an assistant working in such as hard-nosed industry.
I would never have gotten through this movie, if not for Julia; but, even so, it took me enough tries, without falling asleep, that I lost count. Basically this is a day in the life of a soul crushing thankless job, and the woman unlucky enough to be low person on the totem pole. She is pretty invisible through the whole film, except when some dude is bitching at her, or want something from her. If any of them know her name, you'd never know it. String enough days like this together, and you might just end up with a dead soul. You'll definitely end up with dead eyes.
The acting was excellent, but it was too slow.
Very boring and hard to follow. No exciting plot .
The horror was fully realized by 15 minutes into the movie and I commited suicide at the 36 minute mark rather than continue. I LOVEd Julia Garner in Ozark which is why I got this movie. It was a trainwreck, wait, no, a train wreck is something actually happening. This is a day in the life of an office assistant if you removed the 3 interesting things they may do on any given day. A day in the life of a bowel movement, from ejection site to waste treatment plant would had more excitement, even if it was someone else's. I got this for free and instead of storing it= I'm actually going to delete it. What a bore-fest.
Absolutely terrible. Nothing happens in this movie at all! A sad woman's boring day at a shitty job. Take the 2 minutes of Office Space where they show how boring the office job is, stretch it out over an entire film's length, and you have this film. Seriously, NOTHING happens.
Wasted an hour and a half of my life, waiting for something to happen. Where was the thrilling part? Just a regular boring work day.
Everything is so understated and indirect that I could only guess about what was going on. Needed a Wikipedia explanation to make sense of it, so what's that worth? No reason to watch it twice!
This was slow and boring... And didn't go anywhere... A waste of time! Why was this rated so high. Lame!
How is this a thriller? There is nothing thrilling about it. The description is completely misleading. There is no climax, absolutely nothing happens. I have to believe the people saying it’s good are just trying to be social justice warriors but this movie has absolutely nothing going for it other than Julia’s performance of absolutely abysmal material.
Something that no one seems to mention about this extraordinary film is the production design. From the very first scene the film screams Edward Hopper. The mise-en-scene, the moody lighting, and the composition of almost every scene, both indoors and outdoors, are clearly inspired by Hopper's paintings. Visually, it's stunning, yet so far I haven't seen any reviews that mention this. I was instantly taken also by the meditative pace of the film and the brilliant performance by Julia Garner, who barely speaks. I came across this film by accident and I'm so glad I did - it's brilliant.
It's a very realistic film about a very serious topic. Julia Garner is excellent. This isn't an entertaining film in any conventional sense, which explains why it's highly rated by critics but not by the audience.
Wow I wasnt expecting that. My stomach was in knots the entire film. The negative reviews say more about the reviewers than the film itself. A marvel movie or punisher type tv show this is not. There is no loud score to hand hold u thru the emotional dynamics.. no explosions, physical or situational, to contain a distractable mind. It is much more cerebral than that.. a bleak tale about how people can become desensitized to abuse. Garner is hypnotic. So much more realized than her role in ozark. Less showy more introspective. For film fans this is not to be missed.
Biting reflection of the reality between the powerful and powerless in American workplaces.
Almost like looking at a blank screen for 90 minutes. After reading all the positive reviews, I now understand most movie critics view the world through a different lens than I do. And they are mistaken.
