The Beach Bum Reviews
The film is an absolute joy drive, with laughs galore, a soundtrack full of great sing-a-long needle drops and a supporting cast that is portrayed perfectly...

…Korine’s best and most accessible film to date, hinging on an out-there star performance that’s worth celebrating for its sheer extremity…

The Beach Bum is undoubtedly Harmony Korine’s friendliest movie, as the filmmaker tones down his Jean-Luc Godard meets John Waters envelope-pushing tendencies and alienating techniques, yet there’s still a lot of edge to be found in the film.

Episode 34: Relaxer / A Scanner Darkly / The Beach Bum / Holy Motors
| Original Score: 69/100 | Sep 14, 2021
Korine has grown up and mellowed out, shifting his attention inward to make perhaps the only introspective and genuinely kind film of his entire career-all the while preserving his idiosyncratic directing style and penchant for the bizarre.

I'm not surprised that I'm confused about how to react to Harmony Korine, but I do want to praise the acting in The Beach Bum.

Is it great Harmony Korine? No, but it's pretty good Harmony Korine.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 17, 2020
In the end the movie means nothing and proves a complete waste of time.
| Original Score: 2.0/4.0 | Nov 18, 2020
Say what you will about Korine's previous films, but they surely weren't forgettable. It's a shame that he broke that streak here.

McConnaughey goes deeply method in a sleazy hedonistic adventure of messy misadventure.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 8, 2020
The Beach Bum is hilarious, quirky and the yin to the nihilistic yang of Spring Breakers.

I can't fathom a world that "The Beach Bum" exists where it wasn't some instant cult classic.

Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dog both seemed to be having a lot of fun in this movie, and they both turn in good performances. This is a funny, easygoing stoner comedy .

The central idea is strong and there are moments of genius, but it never quite makes the impact that it should. When the effects wear off, you'll be left feeling empty.

This wannabe Big Lebowski seems more concerned about shock value than telling anything like a compelling story.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 13, 2019
Snoop Dogg is good value as Moondog's friend Lingerie, and Jonah Hill is a hoot as his snarky agent. But the real scene-stealer is Martin Lawrence...

So encased in the vapours of weapons-grade weed is The Beach Bum that you half expect it to set off your smoke alarm.
| Original Score: 4 | Oct 29, 2019
It's difficult to know who is more indulged here, Matthew McConaughey, who plays the title character, or director and art-house favourite Harmony Korine, who has assembled a starry cast despite not having made a decent film for years.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 28, 2019
It's as if, like the rest of the cast in this riotous non-event, [McConaughey's] having so much fun making the film that he simply doesn't care. Good for him.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 28, 2019
[A]n incredibly tiresome chronicle of Moondog's dissolute, promiscuous lifestyle, which he is able to afford only because his wife Minnie (Isla Fisher) is richer than Croesus.
