The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales... Reviews

This is ideal viewing for young children, though animation fans of all ages should find much to admire.

| Apr 16, 2020

A funny, sometimes even laugh out loud moment, witty and not at all small minded animated film that is beautifully animated in 2D, makes you wish that there were more films made this way.

Cheeky farm animals save a baby and Christmas.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 9, 2020

It is a remarkable animated comedy with enough incentives for all family members to enjoy it. [Full Review in Spanish]

A beautifully drawn delight with a funny, sparring cast; though some stories appeal more than others. I did question the film's "dangerous behaviours" warning until baby Pauline was sucked out of a plane and my 6 year old piped up "I want to try that!"

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 13, 2019

When we are constantly bombarded by hyperrealistic CGI animation these days, it is so refreshing to see 2D hand-drawn sketchy animation that feels more like a children's story than something trying to imitate real life.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 6, 2019

The film definitely plays with the fairytale genre conventions (which won't subvert), and offers a much needed antidote to the hyper-programmed visual and narrative tricks of more mainstream contemporary animation.

There's nothing too taxing or too involving here, just a very modest set of slightly farcical plots involving some not terribly bright farm animals, and it's all good-natured fun.

A trilogy of stories presented as the performance of an animals-only theatre troupe, the film displays occasional charm but meanders more often than not.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 4, 2018

There's no pretence here, these are purely narratives for children delivered in a way which will appeal to everyone.

In divisive times, Pig and his friends, who consist of maybe a dozen drawn lines apiece, provide much-needed laughter in the tradition of the great Warner Bros. cartoons.

The Gallic shrug in these voices only adds plus de charme.

The look is old-fashioned, but not quite so old-fashioned as some of the references. How many modern children will understand why a long-necked wading bird is delivering babies?

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 14, 2018

Perhaps the episodic structure and the simple visuals make it better suited to home viewing than to a cinema session, but it's a very likeable movie in its way.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 6, 2018

The result is a kooky farmyard-set compendium that has the manic energy of the best Ice Age movies as well as, occasionally, the delicate heart of a Pixar classic.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 6, 2018

It's touching, funny stuff, and not at all post-modern, thank God.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 6, 2018

It does move at a great pace, not least because of the animation.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 6, 2018

The fusion of the performers' droll delivery, the spare yet expressive character designs and well-observed movement creates a real warmth and wit.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 2, 2018

A delightful animated anthology which brings three laugh out loud stories to the big screen with wit and grace.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 1, 2018

The hand-drawn, 2D animation is utterly beguiling, conveying the pleasingly nostalgic feel of a beloved children's book. It's also beautifully paced...
