The Big Blue Reviews
Started diving in 1981, and Big Blue became a cult movie for us all. As the Diving Officer I even got the nickname ENZO. It’s just a brilliant film … without all the CGI
Beautiful movie for lovers of the ocean. Jean Marc Barr is glorious & Jean Reno is wry and witty which becomes his trademark. The cinematography is excellent. The movie manages to be both amusing and poignant. Rosanna Arquette is the only one who lets the movie down - the connection isn’t there & her performance seems one dimensional. It stands the test of time as a classic pelagic tale of childhood friendship & loss.
What a wonderful movie m accept Rosana's acting...terrible acting
I saw this movie when it was initially released. Cinematically it was something to behold on a big screen. The story is a little uneven, but the characters are entertaining, and the story is thought provoking. Jean Reno is particularly good. Jean-Marc Barr's character always left me with a sense of wonder. It's not paced like today's movies, but it's well worth your time.
This film encapsulates the claustrophobia so deep under the sea and its potential to be an escape from life. All presented with beautiful, mostly marine shots and most music played with some level of reverberation, making the viewer few like being in a concert hall.
A beautiful dreamlike film from Luc Besson. A truly life changing film for me, the beginning of my discovery of Besson and his other films. The combination of comedic interplay between Renos' Enzo and Barr as Mayol with the gorgeous cinematography and perfect Èric Serra score make this movie a unique experience that I feel is unsurpassed in cinema. A deep thought provoking and romantic film that deeply affects people who get it and appreciate this piece of art. I have now watched all available versions of this film and plan to visit the Greek Island location of the filming within the next year to try to get close to the magic of this truly magical and meaningful work.
I was expecting more from a Luc Besson film. La Femme Nikita was my baseline for a great film. The BB had a weak storyline and lasted way too long. I was bored by the last half of the film. Skip this one.
Great watch, just saw it for the second time - still great
I love the ocean, and the cinematography here is some of the most beautiful visuals that i've ever seen on film. I got to swim with a dolphin because of this inspiring movie, but the story and characters could have been fleshed out allot better.
It's basically a summer movie.watch it at the beginning of summer, during summer and then book a ticket to the greek islands just like everyone else.
This movie is simply NOT good and is one of Luc Besson's worst films. There are some nice underwater shots and some good moments, but the story is dumb. The lead actor Jean-Marc is terrible. Rosanna Arquette is terribly miscast. Jean Reno is the only actor that can seemingly act...but his role is over the top. To top it off the viewer is forced to sit for almost 3 hours to get through this debacle.
Perhaps for the only time in his life Luc Besson made a boring film.
Probably because I watched the Director's Cut but it felt too long, I see what feeling they were going for but sadly characters feel way to overacted which took me out of the experience constantly. Some scene are impressive just to think how they could shoot that.
Two selfish assholes who couldn't care less about anything but their obsession. Beautiful footage that gets more and more boring, and a terrible story.
Mesmerizing, deep, unforgettable. The music, the images take you to another world - to The Big Blue. The views are very polarized about this film - I find it a superb masterpiece.
Soundtrack, light, story... just the best Besson's work. Of course if you are a fat Redneck that believes that Greece is in South America, you still can give your opinion
