The Boys in the Band Reviews

Yes, it's a movie that focuses on homosexuality and sexual orientation. However, it never feels exclusive to LGTBQ+ viewers, much on the contrary. It transmits a general message of acceptance and self-worth, something everyone can connect with.

| Original Score: B+ | Jul 24, 2023

It's interesting to compare this to the 1968/1970 stage play & film, because both casts reprise their roles from the stage ... the modern cast are out gay men as opposed to their closeted forebears, thus the pain & angst performed is more exposed. Pride!

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 22, 2023

This movie completely lived up to my high expectations. It was stylish, with great costumes, catchy music, and phenomenal acting.

| Original Score: A | Apr 25, 2023

This film is a stunner. The scope of the drama has been opened up and the portrayals have deepened since the Broadway run.

That cast is an all-queer lineup that includes Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, and recent Emmy nominee Jim Parsons. So, hello, let’s celebrate that!

Netflix’s The Boys in the Band is just as stirring and sharp-witted onscreen as it in onstage, paying tribute to Mart Crowley’s timeless tale.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 1, 2022

Has still not outlived the importance of the message it carries.

This may not be as nuanced or layered a depiction of gay men as we have come to enjoy (and perhaps expect) in the present day, but as a piece of history, it still rings true.

| Original Score: 8/10 | May 13, 2022

Penned by the late Crowley himself and frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator Ned Martel, it's brilliantly sharp, witty and energetic nevertheless, illuminating who these characters are and what they mean to one another through charged exchanges.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 26, 2022

Weve seen the new film and found it very well acted, not to mention vastly superior to the original film version thanks to some key revisions by Mart Crowley, who wrote the original play and this screenplay version.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Mar 20, 2022

This show was never for everybody, but it's refreshing for Netflix to commit to presenting a gay story this conscious of both the past and the present. So much drama, and it's all delicious.

The acting fully redeems a flawed script, but it also looks absolutely gorgeous. Parsons is mesmerising as our protagonist who crumbles beneath his internalised shame.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 31, 2021

While perhaps not quite as vital as it was five-plus decades ago, The Boys in the Band feels something close to required viewing.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 21, 2021

It's a piece to be congratulated for its honourable acting from a passionate cast, all involved within the LGBTQ community, something that within itself is a turning point for Hollywood.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 2, 2021

The language may be dated and the story a bit meandering, but this seminal piece of queer theatre has received a new cinematic adaptation worthy of its legacy.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 15, 2021

This feels like Netflix redoing it decently enough, with slick clothes and better catering, because they might as well.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 20, 2020

It feels like a film inspired by the dialogue-heavy independent films of the mid-to-late 1990s, where the storytellers rely on the performances and conversation to maintain the tension and drama.

Despite its origins, Mantello's film still feels like another shiny, highly consumable product of what could be called "the Murphyverse".

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 12, 2020

The Boys in the Band isn't always good, but it's a good time.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 23, 2020

Mantello takes the camera's advantages as they come, zooming in to capture the kind of intimacies and small gestures only film allows.
