The Captive Reviews
It is refreshing to see Ryan Reynolds in a different movie than Deadpool. I think he did the best he can portraying as a father that desperately tries to find his lost daughter, while also suffering from guilt and the blame from his wife. The changing of time frames, along with the presence of Rosario Dawson and Scott Speedman made the movie bizarre to watch. Are police figures that are portrayed supposed to be emotionless? Even the actress that played Cassandra was emotionless with no soul until towards the end. There should have been a clear explanation of how the girl was abducted, or else the audience would be puzzled how all these events happened.
Much more exciting than the poor ratings.
This film is about a girl who gets abducted and is placed into a human trafficking ring and the lengths that her father and the police go to to get her back from her captors. Overall due to the non linear structure, Reynold's performance, and the emotional impact throughout, this movie is like a more indie version of the highly acclaimed Prisoners and despite the unsatisfying ending, an enjoyable experience that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
It's unfortunate the way this film was put together, because the angst of Reynolds and Enos losing their daughter and knowing that she was still somehow alive, was lost in the crafting. Durand was creepy and could've been used more.
Two words: movie sucked.
Ryan Reynolds performance was solid. However It could not save this lame and slow plot.
I cannot get through this movie!! The editing is terrible!!! The theme is tragic and heart-wrenching but the skipping between timelines is very annoying!! RR is fantastic, but the film as a whole falls short of its potential
This movie could had been very good, if not for the very poor editing of such. The jumping back and forth in several time frames, makes this movie confusing and hard to keep track of all the nuisances in it. The director was trying to be clever, but instead ruined a good movie. They should had released it in chronological order, instead of all over the place in the timeline of events.
This movie is light Horror film... lots of suspense and thriller... It is a much better film than what ir s rated.
Ryan Reynolds is awesome, but the story is upsetting, told in a bizarre way, you don't feel compassion for the victims other than Ryan, he as always preformed well. He alone is the reason I didn't give it 1 star. He shows why he is Ryan Reynolds. But be warned, not a great movie.
Super slow to start. Like you could comfortably skip the first 30 minutes and still be able to fully appreciate the movie. Reynolds is about the best thing and that's saying something, as it's not his best performance.
Contrary to the common critical perspective, I think Atom Egoyan turned in a fairly thought-provoking psychological thriller here. Worth seeing for it's fascinating use of non-linear structure.
One of the more ‘screwed up' movies I've seen, both literally and figuratively, pertaining to both the subject and to how the stories were presented.
Strong start gives way to WTF plot points and the lament of what could have been. That said, Ryan Reynolds is an extraordinary actor who gives his all here. In fact, the whole cast delivers, so the fault is entirely Egoyan's. I hate it when I lose two hours of my life like this. As always, I should have looked it up first on RT. That'll teach me.
The non chronological order of events and jumping back between the 8 years for she's to follow. There wasn't much dept to the character or even the topic of exploitation.
Way too many main characters that all look alike, way too complicated of a plot, and the acting is so bad that you could watch static for 2 hours and be better off.
