The Circle Reviews
Watched all of it. Was curious to see where it would go, ultimately it goes nowhere. Fitting.
The Circle had a solid premise with relevant themes about privacy, surveillance, and corporate power, but it never fully delivered on its potential. The plot starts strong, setting up an intriguing world and characters, but the pacing feels off. It spends too much time in the setup and then rushes through key developments, making the shift into the main conflict feel unbalanced. The directing is straightforward but lacks tension, which makes scenes that should be gripping feel flat. Visually, the cinematography is clean and polished, reflecting the sleek, tech-driven setting, but it doesn't do much beyond that to enhance the storytelling. The acting is decent, with Emma Watson delivering a capable performance, though at times she feels a bit restrained. Tom Hanks is solid as always, but his character isn't given much depth. The script is where the movie really struggles. It introduces big ideas but never explores them in a meaningful way, instead leaning into melodrama without the payoff. The score is functional but forgettable, failing to add any real weight to the narrative. Overall, it's a movie with a lot of potential that ends up feeling more like a missed opportunity than a thought-provoking thriller.
A lot of great actors and strong main ideas but the development lacked both depth and especially cohesion. What it seemed like the movie was going for was trying to show a dual perspective, both the really good and really bad of excessive technological surveillance. It's just that I didn't really feel an internal struggle within Miss Watson in her role. A lot more crying and internal dialogue within her character would have helped a lot. Her transition from opposing the main idea to advancing was instantaneous, should have been gradual. There weren't enough arguments between Watson's character and her peers, and the few that were there weren't intense enough. Her objections to Ronald Weasley's indifference (or opinions) to certain subjects were more emotionally charged in Harry apotter. Felt like screenwriting lacked cohesion and Watson tried too hard to be composed and professional in this film when she should have been more emotional unstable, given her major role in this film. I hope she calibrates her emotional reactivity for future films.
I didn’t realise how unpopular this movie was! It’s a masterpiece Emma Watson’s acting is spot on and the overall message is perfect!
The acting is ok. The premise, while interesting, has been done better with a lot of other big tech gone wrong films. But holy crap the character motivations are SOOO stupid... Hanks is the baddy that wants to spy on everyone and does so by announcing it (maybe this isn't SO blantently stupid in 2024... like how Idiocracy was a spoof until it wasn't). If you are gonna be evil, and least tell everyone you WON'T be evil. It works alot better that way. Boyega is the reluctant founder who hates what his work has become so he... uh, sulks at parties and hides in tunnels and makes the WORST character decisions... probably should have stuck to coding. Gillan is kinda a pointless side show about... something... working too much? Which has nothing to do with the plotline other than 'big company evil'. And Watson... ah Watson... the naive new employee that totally goes along with every 1984 thing the company wants to do until the last 15 minutes of the movie. Yikes.
I liked it. It was different and a "could happen someday" feel to it. One never knows in the day and age of no privacy that we already have.
That's the first piece of stinky I've seen with Tom Hanks in it. I so regret the time I've spent watching this idiotic movie. It tries to make some point, but it doesn't, and the acting is not the best either. I wish I had seen the reviews before I wasted my time.
Like others have said, impressive cast lineup and you can tell they had potential for a great movie. Good theme and general concept but the acting was lackluster and it seemed a bit rushed, not enough build time for emotional investment. Bummer.
This is a movie that gives you the feeling that it should have been much better than it is
Awesome concept with terrible execution. Kept waiting for it to get good but never did and the ending was abrupt.
Abuse of an excellent cast. Hanks and Watson are wasted. Misstep by the leads. How did they choose this piece of trash?
I thought it was boring. As other reviewers have said, the ideas and ramifications of AI could’ve been explored much deeper, but they were not. The ending is shockingly poor! I wasn’t sure I even saw it, so I pulled the movie up again to watch the ending. I did see it, but I thought it was just the end of a scene not the whole darn movie!!!
Oh my what a potboiler. Even Tom Hanks can’t save this loser. I tried really hard to like this movie, but it was far too disjointed. The only redeeming value I could find is it may enlighten some of the dangers of artificial intelligence leading to socialism.
Just plain bad. It's seriously nothing more than an aimless nothing burger of a movie that I had completely forgot about until now when I have nothing else to do but write a review for a movie I hate. A waste of time that I can't recommend you dodge enough.
A very shallow representation of the book and a weak movie on its own, no character developments and an extreme oversimplification of the concept make it one of the worst movies i’ve seen recently. With a cast and director so highly praised it really lacks any depth or potential that it could have had. The short duration of the movie is another bad choice, the movie deserved more time and attention to dialogue and character development that this movie profoundly lacked.
On a par with THX 1138 and attempts at Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver. Bad dialogue and wandering camera did little to focus the theme.
I just do not understand why people seem to think that John Boyega and Emma Watson can act. I am also surprised Tom Hanks went with this idea too. Really bad film.
Good premise. Great cast. Enjoyed the movie until the ending. After a well written movie, the ending felt like they just wanted to end it.
Meandering, lost, disturbing NWO luciferian miasma. It reeks a foul stench.
It came across like Orwell's 1984 rewritten for the mentally deficient. The first 10 minutes is probably more than you need to know exactly what's going to transpire. No twists, no great scenery or even a single nip slip--not a single thing to make this 8th grade project worthy of the actors in it.
