The Company You Keep Reviews

It ultimately settles, like many of its characters did, for pleasant mediocrity.

| Mar 17, 2021

Quality political thriller starring (and also directed by) Robert Redford.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 5, 2020

Intelligent. Thoughtful. Reflective. Powerful. A "Must See" film for the generations.

| Nov 27, 2019

An exciting chase thriller with unusual emotional depth - in part thanks to Cliff Martinez' mournful score - The Company You Keep proffers interesting commentary on the sacrifices men will make for women they love.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 4, 2019

The Company You Keep tries to split the difference between thriller and thought piece and winds up in a no-man's land between the two.

| Feb 26, 2019

The supporting characters are quite insubstantial -- little more than cameo roles, cheapening the credentials of this cast somewhat, while resulting in a lack of emotional investment in the tale or the characters. The feature feels contrived, too.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 26, 2019

The story is further bogged down by using Ben as a narrative device, since everything has to switch gears to incorporate him and it doesn't feel as though the filmmakers are especially interested in his character's dilemmas.

| Jan 26, 2019

But as Redford's serious film reminds us, there's no point to saving the world and losing your soul -- or abandoning the souls of those for whom you're responsible.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 12, 2018

The Company that Redford and his celebrated cronies keep is refreshing...fine wine can age better with time. But as far as stimulating political pot-boilers are concerned it is time for these rocking chair radicals to surrender altogether.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 17, 2018

Redford wimps out.

| Apr 13, 2016

Human connections the actors well establish are more convincing than political messages. . .Much is head-scratching and moral debates are more rueful than thoughtfully deep.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jan 1, 2016

It feels like a relic from another time, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

This is the most depressing movie ever made about radicalism.

| Jan 3, 2014

Far and away the most impressive thing about it is that Redford's ability to convince his famous friends to appear in small roles.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 19, 2013

The Company You Keep is an effective, slow-burning mystery, boasting one of the most impressive casts of the last few years.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 12, 2013

Redford proves that he's still capable of making the sort of provocative political thrillers that would make a younger generation envious.

| Jun 12, 2013

Redford skillfully directs a cast so talented and comprehensive it threatens to overpower the briskly unassuming, but sharply written script.

| Original Score: B+ | Jun 3, 2013

Well-crafted, wellintentioned and well, just a tad dull, Redford's radical-chic-road-trip will appeal to the Senior Railcard crowd.

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 17, 2013

Welcome back, Mr Redford.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 16, 2013

[Director Robert Redford] deftly articulates the moral morass that can arise when idealism gives way to reality; he also has some very definite things to say about the way today's sensation-hungry, click-addicted media operates.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 4, 2013
