The Conjuring Reviews
Pretty scary and an all around good movie.
This is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. It was so enjoyable to watch, and every time I see it I am never prepared for how terrifying it is. I definitely recommend it for horror fans!
I own a home. One thing you ALWAYS do before buying a home is take a tour of the home. They obviously didn't do that in this movie. Otherwise they would have noticed a boarded up basement. Also, if you own a dog and the dog refuses to enter the house you just bought...RUN. Drop your crap, get in the car and drive away. That dog knew what was going on. So this family is haunted by a spirit in this house and it's super creepy. It plays jokes, but like all paranormal movies, those jokes get scarier and more brutal. Great scares in this. Doing laundry? Never scary...until now. Ed and Loraine Warren are great at exposing fake hauntings and getting rid of demons. Why the actual f**k would you have a room in your house full of haunted things like Annabelle? That's dumb af. Even the real life Loraine and Ed had the haunted stuff in a separate building on their property. Great scares, family doesn't understand the danger until too late, Annabelle will always be creepy, witches be mean. Must watch!
In an era where attention spans are shrinking and entertainment is often reduced to 16-second clips, some might judge this film by the most basic of standards. But for those who are looking for true horror, this movie delivers exactly what it should: fear, excitement, and a story that doesn’t fall apart. The pacing is spot on, blending jump scares with genuine, lingering terror. It doesn’t just rely on cheap tricks, it builds an atmosphere that keeps you on edge. Whether you’re the type to jump at every shadow or someone who rarely flinches, this film knows how to get under your skin in unexpected ways. If you’re looking for a horror movie that actually does its job scaring you while keeping you entertained this one is absolutely worth watching. Grab some friends, turn off the lights and know that it will scary to put your foot off the bed.
Part horror, part Lifetime original, and part evangelical PSA. I might be able to forgive the disjointed sappiness if every adult character weren't so unlikable and one-dimensional. The mood and pacing is all over the place. Between the suspense and thrills, which are mostly pretty good in themselves, the movie shoehorns in the most awkward sentimental and expositional scenes, accompanied by music that sounds as if it were taken from a made-for-tv soundtrack. The kind of backstory we get is: this is based on a true story, the Salem witch trials were actually good, and witches loudly proclaim their love for Satan as they curse innocent people. There is no interesting motive behind the haunting, and every line is written with maximum possible cheese. I may be disinclined to be so critical if anything in this movie were original, but it's more or less your standard religious horror fare. Witches are evil, demons possess people, and only a benevolent Christian or two can save you. I've seen everything done better, right down to the exorcism. The witch demon using telekinesis to shoot a rifle was new to me, but it was a low point among the intended scary moments (the other really bad one being the second part of the terrible laundry scene, where you are expected to believe that the witch's spirit can control the weather, but only a little), making me laugh out loud in a climactic moment when I should have been terrified. To be entirely fair, this movie is worse in hindsight. It has a good atmosphere, some pretty good scares, and doesn't kill the shock value with loud, orchestrated jump scares early on, like so many horror movies do. It's worth a viewing if you want something suspenseful and scary, which it is most of the time, but it certainly doesn't live up to the hype.
A much less interesting take on the Amnityville Horror 1979.
I have heard of this film before I watched it and I was exited due to the fact that it was a true and interesting story. During the start of the film the hauntings started very quickly which I liked I also got hooked after the dog was found deceased because it shows that the entity is evil and very powerful. Although towards the middle of the film I started to loose interest as it got a bit confusing and I did not really understand Lorraine as it did not explain it very clearly. However at the end of the film I was very interested and on the edge of my seat, I did then watch the second movie which was god as well. This was a good movie and I would watch it again.
An incredible feat in mainstream horror filmmaking, James Wan created a modern classic with The Conjuring, complete with outstanding performances, beautiful writing, great cinematography, a haunting musical score & incredible sound design.
This was actually the first horror movie I ever watched. I've seen it many times and it's good. I'm not a fan of ghost and psychological horror but this series is an exception.
Horro genre has been decreasing but this move will be the one to watch again and again, good actors and good story, either real or fake you feel the anxiety at some point and the story doesn’t need to be that long to connect.
Love the "classic" horror feel throughout the film giving off creepy vibes and fantastic performances.
Uneventful, criminally predictable and not scary in the slightest. The perfect example of audiences liking it because they're expected to. The lighting is great, if that's what you're looking for.
The best horror I’ve ever seen! Great gripping storyline fantastic directing and actors!
I recall the first time I watched The Conjuring. All I could do was hope that I had finally found a solid horror film that would genuinely scare me, as we had been severely lacking in the genre, particularly in the 2000s. I am delighted to recognize that The Conjuring effectively creates a sense of unease and terror through its skillful creation of suspenseful moments rather than relying solely on conventional jump scares. Additionally, it masterfully immerses viewers in an unsettling true story, expertly guided by horror master James Wan, who keeps the audience clenched to their seats, making this both my favorite horror experience and one of my favorite horror films of all time. Grading: A+
My favorite horror movie i think i watched it for the first time in 2021 and it was a must see agian I love everything about the movie idk y it’s a great one and i love it insidious is good as well
Based on the true stories of ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren and their exorcist at the Perron family home in Rhode Island. Considering that is a true story, it becomes pretty scary 🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Max
This movie was good. The reason it will not be rated as high as Sinister, is because it was too cliche. Additionally, Sinister keeps you active the whole time while this one does not.
'The Conjuring' is an extremely solid supernatural horror. I admit that I did find it less interesting as it went on, but even so I did comfortably enjoy seeing the progression of the story; I like that the plot doesn't majorly meander, each stage is clear. It doesn't rely on cheap jump scares either, which is something I was expecting it to utilise. The supernatural elements here are very well done, we don't see terribly much of the demons, at least early on, so any appearances are effective. The stuff with the kids/mum is convincing too. I was happy to see Vera Farmiga appear onscreen, I remember her fondly from 2011's 'Source Code' and have wanted to see her in lead roles since - she's excellent in this. Patrick Wilson and Lili Taylor are also notable performers, while Joey King has one particularly great scene. I'd class this as more creepy than scary, admittedly I seldom find movies scary (just the way my brain is wired with fiction). I can obviously still sense when something is unsettling though, anything with kids being possessed does the job in that regard. How this franchise has ten features and I hadn't even seen one is a mystery to me. Better late than never, hopefully this strong first entry is a sign of things to come.
A great thriller/horror movie for people who are looking for a scare without the gore. It will definitely have your heart racing while you find yourself yelling at the characters through the screen. Always helps when a horror is based of a true story.
