The Conspirator Reviews

Jan 4, 2025

Another well done true story directed by Robert Redford that deals with the post assassination attempt of the conspirators who killed Abraham Lincoln and one lawyer who has to defend one of the conspirators who we the audience must decide whether she was guilty or not.

This movie turns the tragedy of Lincoln's assassination into a rule of law court room drama. Booth viewed Lincoln as a tyrant and was angered that Lincoln was going to give voting rights to African Americans after the war. But somehow Surratt was a victim because she was tried by a military tribunal. I did like that this film was historical and based on actual events. The acting and directing overall were good.

It's about the rule of law, constitutional law, not the rule of fear in the name of keeping a country in order and "safe".

A bit too one-sided in its telling of events, but not bad.

Well written and acted. Pulls you in emotionally. Worth watching.

The cultural elite, Holly-weird (Hollywood) critics are full of themselves, with their low rating of this movie. I found it riveting, compelling, and sobering, because of the weight of history behind it. Too much of other movies is fluff for fickle-headed ninnies. This movie is hard hitting and brings to mind what is important. All the more relevant with deep state crap, fake news, political witch hunts, and kangaroo courts going on even in 2023. This is a most see movie, if you are a true American and believe in the U.S. Constitution.

This is a thoughtful film. Its not got a great deal of action but it does well at making you imagine being in the accused shoes and see things from various characters points of view. Its about principles and justice. I thought James MacAvoy did well in his role - it was interesting seeing him play such a role, defending the accused and I thought it was a surprisingly engrossing watch, one that I'd recommend to others.

Pretty good if you like a film that is not all shoot them up/beat then up or special effects. If this film is accurate and this was the American justice system the it was a disgrace. Enjoyed it.

McAvoy and Wright are strong anchors to the historical plot involving the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. Wright (who is on the confederate side) wasn't directly involved, but her son was. McAvoy's goal is a fair trial and ultimately the supreme court granted civilians trials with a jury because of his actions.

Redford picks history that would have otherwise been forgotten, then brings it to life. A criminal defense attorney, among those who appreciate due process of law will struggle, yet understand this passion play. Aiken, an attorney by education but a Union Civil War hero is selected to represent Mary Surratt, an accused conspirator of the Lincoln Assassination. Frederick Aikens rise into journalism, rather than law were catapulted by these events. Yet, the viewer must be attentive until the very end.

Very well illustrates the importance of justice and how wars and vengeance make monsters. The death penalty was already outdated then, 160 years ago. I really appreciated the complex relationship between the characters, mother, son, daughter, lawyer, priest, senator, prosecutor. Flawless acting, without exception. There are people who just cannot disappoint, even after decades in the movie business, and Redford is one of them.

Its story and actors are strong, it feels to me at least that that is all it had. The script is surprisingly boring, and the real life figures not fleshed out enough.

A good and effective historical drama about the woman who, along with seven others, was accused of conspiring to kill President Lincoln.

I fell asleep 2.3 minutes into this movie. One star for being as good as a sleeping pill, and healthier!

Reminds me of another film about innocence and the justice, "L'Affaire du Courrier de Lyon", where a case of mistaken identity led to the execution of an innocent man.

An absorbing tale of the trial of Mary Surratt, well acted and directed, that leaves you feeling that she was definitely "railroaded,." and suffered her fate to save her son, something any mother would do. However, there are a few differences between the movie and the real story. Definitely keeps your interest, and is worth a watch.

Never knew this, a real eye opener and a good movie, not over dramatised.

A true story. Quite well done. Understated but good

A solid filmmaking effort by Robert Redford, boldly daring to go where no one has gone before, and where most will steer clear from. Empathizing with Confederate-sympathizers is a no-no in Hollywood as they are typically treated as inhuman and dimensionless. But this treads a whole new body of water that nobody in Hollywood has dared to set their sights on. Leave it to the independent spirit of Robert Redford. Superb photography by Newton Thomas Sigel. Avy Kaufman assembles a flawless cast
