The Crow Reviews

The Crow easily overcomes its camp and inconsistent CGI by simply being itself.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Sep 3, 2024

Full of dark skies, foreboding urban streets, smoke, fire, anger, and leather, The Crow is a Goth-rock fantasy of eternal love and righteous vengeance made tragically immortal by the death of its star, Brandon Lee, during production.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 3, 2024

a unique visual aesthetic and strong script

As it stands, The Crow endures as a testament to Lee’s untapped potential...

... dark, rainy, and askew, like Gotham on extreme tilt.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 15, 2024

What makes 'The Crow' work so well is its sheer intensity. It pulses with gothic energy, inky black nights and driving rain, long black hair and long black coats.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 4, 2024

The ordinary business of motivation is of far less importance than the general atmosphere of cartoony retribution and doom. It’s a potent slice of goth fantasy anarchy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 30, 2024

In all, the vibrance of "The Crow’s" emotional quotient remains as vivid as its violence and what ultimately endures about the film is not its edge but its empathy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 28, 2024

A dark and stylishly gothic hybrid of supernatural action and revenge fantasy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 12, 2024

Lee's portrayal of Eric Draven was dark and mysterious while showcasing his ability to do action scenes.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | May 6, 2024

... despite its emo & goth trappings, Lee brings an optimism and heart to Eric, a soulfulness that centers hope, love, & connection, creating the opportunity for positive affirmation in the aftermath. Or, as we come to know, “it can’t rain all the time.”

| May 6, 2024

Neither masterpiece nor cringe, The Crow lives eternal as a work of abject earnesty.

All the pieces fell into place to create a mood and atmosphere that fits the story perfectly.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Feb 2, 2023

There's something particularly hypnotic about its gothic aesthetic that elevates the material and makes it entertaining in every dark alley Brandon Lee's shadow wanders through in his final act. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 7/10 | Sep 11, 2022

The film is haunted by a reworked script that may be weighed down by Lee's memory, making it a bit of a morality play and a little faux sentimental.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 26, 2022

...still a shockingly effective movie, one that plays with mythic ideas while also depicting a gone-to-hell world...

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 1, 2022

Very impassioned in sharing deep devotion.

[UPDATED 2024 4K + BLU-RAY REVIEW] Despite its hardcore demeanor, there's also a surprisingly sensitive streak weaving throughout the film.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 24, 2021

I will say that I rewatched it for this project, and was surprised to see how well it holds up. It might be perhaps the most early 90s movie ever made, but unlike, say, Reality Bites, it's in a way that's still cool and stylish.

A first-rate revenge fantasy and a thrilling adaptation of the comic book series on which it's based.
