The Discovery Reviews
…I expected much more from this movie as it was touted as being a Sundance movie but I was disappointed with the plot and the poor acting, especially from Rooney and Jason. Absolutely no chemistry there. Sad 😞
Charlie McDowell seems to only score. I’m a fan. Total mind F. I was hooked the whole time.
The general critique and rating does The Discovery an injustice when viewed too narrowly. This is something I refer to others when appropriate for them. Critics lament the lack of definition and answers only to see it as failure. This is art dedicated to the question. It is exploration of belief and spiritualism that is birthed, lived and closed inside that question. I loved it.
Dark and gloomy dystopian dreariness. The Discovery had some things to say, but it said none of them... other than reinforcing the belief that the only reason we cannot have proof of an afterlife is because suicide would become too prevalent, progress would stop, and death would win.
I got 20 minutes in and had to turn it off. It's pretentious and pseudo-logical, with a highly simplistic take on human psychology.
The focus on interpersonal connection between the characters rather than pandering to sci-fi intrigue was refreshing. It looped beautifully upon itself.
Not for me. I generally like Redford a lot, so gave this a watch. Too slow, too heavy handed, too convoluted. I’m not sure I followed it entirely, but I think my mind drifted out of boredom. There might be something of merit here but I didn’t get it.
A cerebral movies for those of who enjoy an alternative to spoon-fed plots with predictable endings. Well written, directed, cast with a sublime pace and a ….. ending.
Moody and heart-achy. I loved this movie. It's not a "feel good" movie, but if you'd like to walk away having felt something deeper, maybe even a little sad, watch it.
The foundation of this movie is solid, but the script isn't that strong and does waste the talents of it's cast.
Rotten tomatoes remove all of my reviews. This my 8th review. Not that you'd know that. I speak the truth they know this and silence my opinions. Being said this motion picture did not conform to my personal beliefs surrounding the topic at hand. I go to church every Sunday and they didn't show heaven and God like I was expecting. I suggest that everyone seeing this review should read the book called 'The Everlasting Man', it will show you on the TRUTH! Because of this my opinion of this film can go no higher that 35.54/100.00
The initiative in the first few minutes was promising, even up to the presence of Ronney Mara...after that, there was no way to right the sails of a ship that was destined to sink.
This was a terrible movie on all levels. I am at a complete loss as to why Robert Redford agreed to do this movie. The concept was good, the execution failed completely.
I watched 75% of this only bc it was a Sundance movie, Robert Redford and great cast. When RR character finally said "Destroy The Machine", I just gave up. Disappointing
So boring, stopped halfway.
Slow, boring, irreverent dialogue surrounding a serious subject does not make a movie "deep". This just feels lazy on the director's part. Just reading the description of the movie gives you more insight than wasting 2 hours waiting for them to get to the point.
I cannot fathom how disappointing this was. Rooney Mara is the only saving grace of this movie but even she wasn't enough to stop this tragedy. The premise is so promising but nothing else delivers. The dialogue is amateur, the plot is patchy, the attempt at a romance subplot is cheap and unimaginative. The reveal at the end is somewhat interesting but overall, it's difficult to walk away feeling anything other than underwhelmed.
