The Duke of Burgundy Reviews

Jul 21, 2024

Not terrible, but very repetitive and ultimately didn't seem like all that repetition ultimately led anywhere particularly interesting.

This was an interesting film and I did enjoy watching it. Many films I watch are quite complex and, in their own way, intense and it was nice to have something a bit freer and easier to watch, it was quite nice to relax into the scenes without having to really think and analyse. However, I am not without criticism for this film. At first it seemed like an 'erotica' and I wanted to mark it down simply for that reason because even when intelligently done there is a certain 'dirtiness' to the genre but the film grew on me too much becoming a relationship drama which is OK but then with a touch on the supernatural/surreal and even a gothic/horror edge with some of the images of that carved chest I felt like it was trying to be too many things and only touched on the surface of each and more importantly the plot suffered - it was a little thin. Evelyn is a screwed up pervert with little self control who loves Cynthia but also wants her to do her bidding, Cynthia wants to be a good lover but at the same time just wants a normal relationship with the woman she loves - I get it, I really don't need to be told again and again. Also, the characters were a little superficial - we didn't really know anything about them, who they were or where they came from; they were well acted at least. The film is full of symbolism and meaning but at times it feels a little forced and perhaps we could say something about how it is profound on the subject of sexuality but really arousal is arousal, there is nothing too deep about it - if a man just wants to get drunk does it really make much difference what he drinks to do so? That being said the film was nicely shot and very creative and does highlight briefly one or two relationship questions. A point of note is there were some extremely beautiful early autumn shots correlated by the whole film having a quiet and subdued feel; for me these autumn scenes were where there was the most intense feeling in the film mirrored as Cynthia enters into the early autumn years of her life but this was only touched on once really. I am going to give this film a five out of ten - although it was highly creative and original and did have some really beautiful shots and it was also easy and enjoyable to watch the plot and characters were a little thin and the film lacked the layered depth of the others, but overall very pleased to have seen it.

I decided to watch this because it had good reviews. It never got going for me and that is a couple of hours of my life I will never get back, not sure what the point of it was. For me the star was the cat.

This is a gorgeous film. Impressive work by screenwriter and director Peter Strickland of setting and maintaining the proper tone throughout, varying it when necessary. Even better was his understanding of the power of the human face and body language; how so much can be expressed without words, with just a look,or a look away. Excellent casting as well, as Knudsen and D'Anna give every impression of being a couple very much in love and very much aware of how to appease the other's great desires. Finally, the imagery of the moths and butterflies throughout added its own strength to the film. These very subtle, fragile creatures also perform remarkable physical feats as they are brimming with energy.

Strickland's unwavering confidence in his stylistic approach is more than impressive & hypnotic visual story telling; it's a unique departure from the the majority of modern cinema. If you're new to Strickland's work, an approximate overview would be if you blended the styles of David Lynch, Dario Argento, Panos Cosmatos, (only with a lot more mescaline & LSD...)

Cynthia and Evelyn are lovers acting out and experimenting their erotic fantasies including domination, bondage and voyeurism. Fine acting and striking visuals this is an extremely impressive production initially engrossing but becomes repetitive and with a lack of plot the film doesn't go anywhere. Adding to the atmosphere is an excellent soundtrack by Cat's Eyes which reminded me of music by Angelo Badalamenti and vocalist Julee Cruise from the tv series Twin Peaks (1990).

A very bizarre bdsm movie. Watch the first 30min and you've seen everything. Good soundtrack though

Beautifully filmed with truly stunning visuals, 'The Duke of Burgundy' is like watching someone's dream being projected onto a screen and offers its audience a complex, smartly written and very human story that explores the symbiotic, dominant/submissive relationship between two women and how they are affected by it from a psychological perspective. Nothing is quite as it seems and the way the themes are explored is a delight to watch, but it certainly isn't going to be for everyone, and you may just have to be in the right mood to watch it. It feels like a sophisticated piece of art and it's one that stays with you for a bit after the credits have rolled.

I was looking forward to this artsy slice of eroticism but was unusually bored by its over indulgent pretentiousness. We never discover about the ridiculous world these privileged women live in. I realise it is just a fantasy but really...?! Despite this there are a couple of stunning sequences: one with flickering insect wings which was extraordinarily beautiful. I wanted to like it more but felt there just wasn't enough substance.

I loved this movie!! Beautiful and really well acted.

The story of a lesbian couple which engage in a constant role play in which one is dominant and the other is submissive, but the dominant player is becoming weary of the game and wants to just have a normal relationship. It is a slow burn film, with a bit of surrealism thrown it, and lots of imagery of butterflies. Well made, a tad haunting, and beautiful to look at...even when it gets a little weird.

Don't think too much about shell. It's much deeper. Very clever made with all this repeats and intonations. like box of tricks you can always discover something new which you didn't payed attention from first view. great work of art-director and actors.

Mesmerizing film which ends up, beyond its aesthetics, having something very affecting to say about what time does to relationships, the endurance of love, and negotiating the needs of each partner.

A beautiful, unique, and psychologically deep love story.

Aug 30, 2016

A tightly controlled, unsettling picture exploring the relationship between love and pain.

Bizarre, funny and incredibly stylish. Sidse Babett Knudsen is in gorgeous form and perfectly cast in this delightfully odd little film.
