The Face of Love Reviews

Great movie. Atmospheric, old school solid script and acting.

This is a sad watch - it features a great cast and performances from Annette Bening, Ed Harris and Robin Williams (Williams is only on screen for a few minutes though, not being one of the main characters). I found this an emotional watch - if your prone to crying at films then tissues will probably be required. I thought this film handled the themes sensitively and I found it a good watch. Its somewhat thought provoking (which is something I like the films I see to be) and I would recommend it to others, yes.

Amo esses romances dramáticos fofinhos e lindinhos…

Beautifully acted and suspenseful. A mature love and loss played with warmth, depth and restraint.

Great actors, lack of script, pointless end.

This must be one of the worst films i have ever seen. So bad, that not even the greats like Benning, Harris and Williams can save it. Very bad script and direction. Waste of money, talent and my time.

Endearing in a creepy kind of way. Any of us could do the same. I couldn't think of a better way for the movie to play out.

Love this movie. Deep, enchanting, unsettling, but revealing as you ask yourself, "what would I do?" So many literary twists and devices are used that it's worth a second watch to pick them all up along the way. Lots of room for interpretation about what things mean, including the ending, that it gives ample food for thought in the difficult situation presented. Rare to see a profound and thought-provoking movie these days that lets you sort through the emotions and meaning on your own without presuming the outcome. In that way, the movie captures precisely the challenges of life itself. Bravo.

Extremely touching movie with excellent performances by Benning and Harris! The last scene is very touching and hits home!

An intimately thoughtful and intricately moving romance about a grieving widow holding in check a myriad of conflicting sentiments when she meets years later an eidetic image of her dead husband and attempts in secret to make new memories from the past with him.

The script is a little shallow but the end of the movie provokes so many questions its worth watching it.

Shame on the critics. We really should judge films on the many and varied ways they can shine or fall down. This was an excellent film although more suited to adult audiences with the right disposition. I was really unsure how this film was going to end, and it did not disappoint. The doppelganger aspect of the story was totally believable and it was a pleasure to watch the two leads weave their spell. A gem.

Ed Harris in a duel role, with so many of the same wrinkles in the same place, but playing two different roles never really cuts it. The film though is more about the psychological effect on Annette Bening's widow figure, which is explored well enough.

All I can say is creepy. It physically made me uncomfortable to watch it yet I did because of the strength and reputation of the actors. I wouldn't recommend.

if you fall for someone who reminds you of another, are you really in love with the new???

This one hit close to home for me as a Widow. I watched this lonely and broken on Valentines Day, asking myself if I could deal with another man looking like my husband. It was strangely therapeutic for me. Beautiful

The great performances from the leads work well with an interesting concept and story. Shame nothing is explained why they look so much alike and was hoping for a better ending. Robin Williams fans take note his role is an extended cameo. An ok but flawed romance.

As a huge fan of director Arie Posin's misunderstood and underrated look at suburbia in his 2005 debut film The Chumscrubber, it was with great anticipation I awaited his long gestating follow up which turned out to be this slice of middle aged romance The Face of Love (or the Look of Love in some countries). The cast looked good, the story seemed intriguing and even though the initial reaction to this film was lukewarm at best I still held out hope that the promise Posin showed on debut would come to the forefront, sadly this was not to be the case. The Face of Love is a hapless film, a groan inducing amateurishly written tale of love and loss that suffers the rare feat of growing worse and worse as the dire dialogue and story line unfolds one after the other. It's actually quiet embarrassing to sit back and witness the silly story take full effect and the actors of such experienced calibre like Annette Benning, Ed Harris and even the late Robin Williams (in a turn obviously taken during his financial troubles) struggle to make the film work. Benning in particular looks utterly lost in her role as grieving widow Nikki, she's given most of the films worst lines and scenes but to say even the reliable Ed Harris succeeds would be a lie as the actor also gets lost further and further into a character that was never going to work. With a lack of solid direction, badly directed acting turns and a terrible script it's like Posin has taken a step back in all areas from The Chumscrubber. The Chumscrubber was often inventive, satirically smart and featured an abundance of neat acting turns (bar the always horrible Camilla Belle) which all fail to eventuate here. Posin was clearly passionate about his follow up project, reading about the film it's easy to see that it was not an easy sell and at the heart of proceedings there is an undeniably intriguing story to tell but in the final product there is no real heart and soul, it's a cold picture where it should have been full of human emotion and care. We never wholeheartedly feel the love Nikki feels for Garret and his doppelganger Tom and romantic moments between the lovers always feels forced and eerily creepy. It's almost like the film turned into a voyeuristic nightmare where we should have been engaged in an emotionally charged love. Without question one of the year's worst films and a major disappointment for those like me that thought Posin was a talent to watch. Face of Love is an embarrassment for all those involved and a showcase for how not to produce a potentially effective screen story. Hard to watch for all the wrong reasons, Face of Love neither inspires, affects nor intrigues, yet does make you wish the horrors on screen would stop for the love of all things decent! a great cast but that doesn't equate to a great movie. way too long. a selfish woman trying to hold onto something that is no longer there. stringing on a man she thinks she knows but doesn't realize that he isn't her husband, he's a lookalike. it's disgusting. she needs to grieve, needs to move on... not hold onto the past.
