The Fighter Reviews
The Fighter is one of those movies where you wish we had Oscar nominated movies like this now in this decade. The 2020s have been a real dry spell of average films that don't hold a candle to films like David O. Russell's trilogy of great character studies of relatable human beings.
I have read several times that in romance the opposite of love is not hate it is indifference. That came to mind today in 2024 when I watched an old talk show clip with guest Amy Adams. That led me to look up the film being discussed because I didn't recognize anything mentioned. My surprise was that I had seen it soon after it came out and I had obviously completely forgotten. Now I had to think back and all that came to me was Christian Bale doing a lot of mumbling and looking confused but not one scene or quote was recalled. I usually remember something in particular from movies as to why I think they were poor. The Fighters didn't warrant even that.
Just superb all around. Incredible performances.
With a fantastic plot and even better acting from everyone involved, this is as good as it gets for a boxing movie. I'd dare to even say the best Wahlberg movie to date. Christian Bale does what he does best and delivers a very compelling drug addicted crap stain. Don't sleep on this movie.
Another one of my all time favorite movies which had a really good cast with a very good story!
Great story with a satisfying ending. Loved both Wahlberg and Bale. HEAD BODY HEAD BODY
Probably the best sport biopic movie, 2 stories being told along side each other, definitely tugging on a few heart strings. My favourite Christian Bale performance, true work of art.
ABSOLUTELY, one of the WORST films EVER!!!! The character played by Christian Bale is putrid and makes me want to throw up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOTH the character and the portrayal are ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!!!!! One of the WORST FILMS -->> EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark Wahlburg / Amy Adams - YOU should NOT have been involved with this TERRIBLE film!!! Christian Bale - YOU should be ASHAMED of yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After a long time Hritik looked same intense in a patriotic movie like lakshya. This movies has all the right things for a patriotic movies. Thanks for making such movies. Excellent way to film our modern brave soldiers saving our country day in day out. All the cast members are above par in acting. Anil Kapoor is same charismatic. Hritik Roshan has shown that he still has years left. A come back movie for him. Worth watching this movies specially with kids. Has right humor that soldiers share. Deepika Padukone is looking great as a Squadron leade role. The filmmakers should always dedicate movies each year for the soldiers.Air Force - Proud of you
Not very inspireing or unique Drama about a Boxer from the lover working clans who tries to get big while his disfunctional family tries it's best to help, but actually is an obstacle. Also, his brothers drugaddiction is overshadowing and complicating familylife, a very moralistic and not very convincing "Don't do Drugs" Massage is delivered here... Qll in All, a very weak Story with quite good actors, but their acting can't help this quite boring movie to shine or spark interest. Everything is very predictable and this kind of "working class boy is making it" - Story allready had it's peak with the first Rocky-movie, which btw. Was 3times more authentic and touching then this quite soulless Hollywood-output.
A fun to watch and well acted film. The fact that Dicky Ward thought that HBO was making a movie about his 'comeback' when it was really about "Crack" is one of the fun parts.
A great movie that gets a great true story about Mickey ward out there to the public. Christian Bale was excellent, just like he always is. Mark Wahlberg, did Wahlberg things, but in a movie about a gruff Boston fighter, it works just fine
Amazing acting. The focus is on Wahlberg's solid performance as Micky with the others delivering superb performances, especially Bale and Adams.
Just watched it for the second time. Excellent true story. Christian Bale always amazed me, falls right into any role for an English guy.
Great movie with really great performances
David O. Russell’s best movie! A masterpiece!
Albeit its somewhat messy structure and the fact that it outpaces itself towards the end, The Fighter is a hard-hitting, dramatically edged and convincingly depicted biographical sports drama that skillfully handles its tough message while being exquisitely directed and acted.
This film is OK. The acting is really good, with Christian Bale doing what he does best and giving his all in every performance. The characters however are very unlikable and for me they weren't people I could connect with or care about. The film is boring at first and I thought about calling it quits, but after the first 45 minutes the story starts to get interesting and it managed to grab my attention enough to finish it. If you're a fan of the real life brothers or enjoy boxing movies you may like this, otherwise if you're a casual viewer like me it's probably worth a skip.
"The Fighter" (2010) is a biographical drama/sport movie directed by David O. Russell and starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams. The film tells the story of boxer Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his relationship with his half-brother and trainer Dicky Eklund (Bale), who is also a former boxer and a drug addict. One of the strongest aspects of the film is the acting. Mark Wahlberg delivers a solid performance as Micky Ward, portraying him as a determined and hard-working athlete who is constantly trying to improve. Christian Bale, on the other hand, steals the show with his incredible portrayal of Dicky Eklund. Bale captures the nuances of his character's addiction and erratic behavior, making the audience feel both empathy and frustration towards him. Amy Adams also delivers a powerful performance as Micky's girlfriend, Charlene, adding depth and complexity to her character. The plot of "The Fighter" is engaging and well-paced, with a good balance between the drama of Micky and Dicky's personal lives and the intensity of their boxing matches. The film also does an excellent job of exploring the complexities of family relationships, particularly between Micky and Dicky, who have a complicated and often strained bond. The screenplay is well-written, with sharp dialogue and memorable scenes. The cinematography is another highlight of the film. The fight scenes are expertly shot, with dynamic camera movements and editing that capture the excitement and brutality of the sport. The film also does a good job of immersing the audience in the gritty world of Lowell, Massachusetts, where the story takes place. On the negative side, some viewers may find the film to be formulaic and predictable, particularly in its portrayal of the underdog athlete overcoming obstacles to achieve success. Additionally, while the film does an excellent job of exploring the relationship between Micky and Dicky, it could have delved deeper into the other characters, such as Micky's mother and sisters, who are somewhat underdeveloped. Overall, "The Fighter" is a well-made and compelling drama/sport film that features excellent performances, strong storytelling, and impressive cinematography. It is definitely worth watching, especially for fans of boxing movies and biographical dramas.
I'm not a particularly fond fan of Rocky-esque movies, but this is not that. The Fighter was a brilliant adaption of a true story which is not just about fighting. It's about family, loyalty, rebuilding, and reinventing. A phenomenal film.
