The Finest Hours Reviews

Sep 8, 2024

I personally didn't find The Finest Hours to be outstanding, but it's still got great performances, solid direction and some stunning visuals.

I love this classic movie making approach and the cast is compelling. I enjoyed Chris Pine but it was many of the secondary characters that really keeps me coming back. I am shocked that Casey Affleck hasn't gotten more attention for this performance and while Rachael Brosnahan has a small role she really brings it home. I do wish the writing and directing was stronger, especially for the quieter moments in the movie but all together this one is going on my classics shelf.

Not great obviously, but it keeps you interested in the screen. Also, a good cast; maybe the leading female is the one who fell very short

Based on a book by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman, which is based on the true story of the Coast Guard rescue of the crew of the SS Pendleton in 1952. I didn’t latch on to any of the characters in this film and so wasn’t invested in the rescue attempt. Chris Pine plays a great soft-spoken and shy Coast Guardsman, but I didn’t buy into the love interest that was presented. The predicament the SS Pendleton got into, and how they got out, was more interesting to me. The special effects were good and held up today. Check this film out if you're curious.

A Disney movie bloated with tropes and infused with hyperbolic melodrama? I never thought it possible until I watched this film. I should have cleaned the streets of my neighborhood for two hours instead.

I love a good yarn based on a true story and this film did a passable job bringing an unbelievable story to life, even if it was strangely bland. Chris Pine overplayed the hero's lack of confidence to the point I was ready to punch the tv and there were a couple really stupid scenes (like the strong-willed girl who was suddenly ditzy enough to go out into a blizzard without a jacket), but overall the cast, which was absolutely stacked with big names, did a fine job of bringing this story to life.

Yes, it is pretty formulaic and by the numbers. Shoehorning in characters who had nothing to do with the plot to create easy emotional attachments—so what? It's an expensive Disney production that faithfully adapts the source material, including some minor nuances. This movie doesn't need to "change lives" or present some unprecedented study of a rescue movie. Although it would have been nice if the second ship's POV was also included, it would unquestionably bloat the runtime, so it is understandable why it got completely cut. Casey Affleck is first class in this. The most burned-out engineer in the Atlantic Ocean. He certainly brings likeability to the crew of the Pendleton.

Really interesting true action story. It is also extremely exciting.

Impressive open sea effects & nice work in honor of the Coast Guard. Disney movie magic which could have been bland or over the top, but it was focused and respectful.

I thought this was a good film and I particularly liked that it told the story from both Ray and Miriams perspective. I wasn't familiar with the story and I found myself fearing the worst for Miriams partner, so I was relatively gripped to the screen, hoping for a good outcome. I respected Miriam as a character for being seemingly quite independent and not afraid to speak out, to try and get any word on her boyfriends whereabouts. I thought it was quite an engrossing watch - it seemed pretty realistic to me and I'd say its a good film.

"The Finest Hours" is a solid and old-school movie about heroism. When the movie gets going there are plenty of exhilarating moments that had me invested. The movie seems to rush the exposition and ending and I think it could have been an even longer and more fleshed-out movie. I still think it is technically well made and acted and I was engaged with the rescue at the center of the story. Overall, it is a solid thrill ride with an emotional center and plenty of entertainment value.

Heroism maybe the main theme here with some hollow drama-tic seasoning, but wondering what is the real plan here by trying to to fit everyone in that small coast guard boat? And make it back alive? We all live or we all die?

I enjoyed this one and the ture story it told about these men who managed survived to survive despite the odds against them.

This dramatic rescue movie was great. Chris Pine, Holliday Grainger, Ben Foster, Eric Bana, Casey Affleck, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. This true story about the Coast Guardsman Bernie Weber and his fellow Coast Guardsmen rescuing workers on an oil tanker about to sink was dramatic, heroic, and inspirational. These men did the impossible and never gave up no matter what challenges they faced. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a movie for an entire family.
