The First Slam Dunk Reviews
Thought I would get some nostalgia on this but totally blown away by the rearrangement. Those who read and watch the manga and anime series will be totally surprised by this. The animations is totally top tier!
One of the best animated films ever.
The film is beautifully animated, but what stands out most is its dynamic rhythm and movement, especially during the basketball game scenes. The intense pacing creates tension and excitement, making us feel fully invested in the outcome, even if it’s somewhat predictable. That said, the match itself feels a bit unrealistic, relying on anime logic both in the players’ physicality and personalities, as well as the classic last-minute comeback trope. However, given that this is an anime movie, it’s easy to overlook. I thought it was a smart choice to focus on a single game, using flashbacks to weave in the protagonist’s backstory throughout. While effective, the film ultimately doesn’t add much new to the common anime theme of dealing with grief and past trauma. The supporting characters have their own subplots and personalities, but they aren’t explored deeply, nor do they strongly connect to the protagonist’s arc. Shifting some focus away from the game to develop these elements further could have strengthened the narrative, though the film still works as it is. Since it’s based on an existing manga and anime, I was left with the impression that prior familiarity with the IP might enhance the experience. Still, these are minor issues in an exciting sports movie that I’d recommend to fans of anime and sports films alike.
Glad this finally made it to Amazon Prime. Chris Stuckmann brought me here. He loved this film, so I had to see it. I'm not an anime fan, but I could see the appeal to this story.
While many sports flicks are formulaically easy bets yet still cheerful, this not only transcends the genre but unconventionally refines to naturally exhilarating heights with an enthralling grip drawn to the edge of your seat, all while slamming dunks with the deserving rank of being one of the best animated films over such detailed fluidity to manageably replicate a sporting event. This movie will make you stand up and cheer. This movie gets what makes basketball great. I was so into the game that I was sweating and my heart racing while I watched. I would say that I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, but that's not true. I actually stood up to cheer and pump my fist as I watched. I can say all the sports movie review cliché stuff about this film, and it is all true. For those unfamiliar with the series, this movie does an excellent job of getting you up to speed on the characters and conflict. If, like me, you saw every episode of the series, it will surprise you that Miyagi is the main character. And sadly, there is no kiss from Haruko Akagi. The animation takes some getting used to, but it is good once you're immersed in their world. And I liked the basketball stuff in the movie more than the flashback stuff. But those are my only gripes. The music is great, the characters are great, and the story is great. If this movie does not pump you up, you do not have a pulse.
One of the greatest movies I've seen in my life. I'm not kidding. Amazing animation, amazing soundtrack, amazing story all amazingly executed. And the best part it's a movie for everyone. Even if you don't like Anime. Even if you don't like basketball. Even if you don't care about sports. Enough said go watch it!!!
Well there's two hours of life I'll never get back. I'll say this the animation was good, I'm not talking about that the animation conveyed emotionally, I'm talking about the quality of the animation. The rest of it was unintelligible drivel.
Como drama deportivo, la emoción es tan palpable como el de un partido en directo, sobre todo por lo realistas que son los personajes, creados en un estilo animado bastante distinto al ya conocido.
Cut to the chase, it's missing the main touching moments of the original Manga cartoon. Sakuragi getting up miraclably after reminiscing of his one sided love Akagi's younger sister Haruko asking him " Do you like basketball?" when they first met and Sakuragi abruptly miraclably gets up and holds her hand and replies " Yes I do, this time it's for real". This was the original Manga Slam Dunk's best moment in the whole storyline and how could this Movie theater version miss that? This is compared to skipping out Goku from Dragon Ball Z turning into the Super Saiyan when he gets furious when Friza kills his best friend Krilin. It's like Goku turns into Super Saiyan without any reason after they thought Friza died after getting hit with Goku's Genkidama (Spirit Bomb) but Friza comes back alive. When Friza comes back and kills Goku's best friend by blowing him up, that caused Goku's inner anger to blow up and he snaps and looses his cool and becomes furious which lead him to become Super Saiyan. Going back to the First Slam Dunk, I think they missed the arguably the most important scene of entire cartoon book by skipping Sakuragi abruptly getting up and holding Haruko's hand and telling her " Yes I do, this time it's for real". To make this Theater version even worse, she didn't even come down to the bench when Sakuragi got up. The original storyline totally didn't line up at all. I think that was an epic fail. I still gave 3 out of 5 because I love the original Manga Cartoon version and it's a legendary cartoon.
Have read the entirety of Slam Dunk. I do like that this story is told by the perspective of Miyagi. Awesome movie overall, if you like basketball this is a great movie to watch even without any prior knowledge of Slam Dunk as a series. But trust me Slam Dunk is the best sports manga of all time. Inoue’s drawing and storytelling skills is on a different level compared to other sports manga/anime.
THE Slam Dunk. Deserves an Academy Award.
Never seen the original slam dunk but after watching this movie I surely will. The storytelling was some of the best i have seen, really engaging and surrounded with the intensity of the basketball game then into the back story of the players kept the pace even and meaningful that was shown throughout the film, the animation was exceptional with 2D and 3D seamlessly intertwining giving the movie a whole nother dimension that makes the film get that bit extra praise overall 5/5 and I have no complaints absolute masterpiece
I signed up just to share how amazing this anime is made as a sequel of the best comics ever. Truly amazing visuals and story telling. Priceless nostalgic entertainment.
I waited many years for this and here it is. Guh damn, sakuragi is really something else. Aside from admiring MJ playing hoops in the NBA, this anime and manga really gave me some good childhood days. I even wore the jersey number 10 and the fact that sakuragi wears the bred jordan 1 is just perfect. Anybody who’s in the comment section and reading this, trust me. It’s worth the watch. If you haven’t watched the anime or read the manga, I suggest you do that too. Thank you to the folks who made this come to life. Hoping to see a sequel or the actual continuation of the anime.
i thought it was good there was a lot going on and made me want to watch more i didn't like that it was in a different language and i had to concentrate on the subtitles i related to the film by that my sister is good at badminton and that my parents want me to follow in her footsteps
the animation was good however I felt that most plot twists were predictable
Con un gran desarrollo de personajes y una trama profundamente buena, The first slamp dunk simplemente es perfecta
