The Five-Year Engagement Reviews
The most unromantic romantic comedy I've ever seen. Saving private Ryan was both more romantic and had more laughs. Shocking this was ever greenlit.
I thought it was okay. I liked Emily Blunt in it. Thought her character was interesting. I didn't find it super funny. I did think Chris Pratt was the funniest part, especially him singing. Segel plays the same character he plays in every movie.
It's funny. In lots of places. The “-com” part is there, but the romantic aspect... well, the movie is basically just a not-very-dramatic story about slowly drifting away plus a not-very-convincing portayal of “deeper feelings.”
What a big disappointment from Jason and Emily. The Five-Year Engagement has its moments, but they are few and far between.
Over 10 years and Judd Apatow makes another hilarious romantic-comedy tons of laughs and such sweetness and sincerity Blunt and Segel have terrific on-screen chemistry the movie goes on a tad too long but the characters allow themselves to grow and learn what love really is when tying the knot I also really love Alison Brie as the sister who gets married 1st and has a change of heart about the whole institution when she's raising a family and knows what's best for Violet in the process, she can pull off an English accent maybe John Rys-Ifans' storyline could have been cut, too this movie though made me laugh, put a smile on my face and helped me look at the whole image of what marriage should run its course
Star Spangled ! Decent plot, excellent character development !
Awful. Tedious pacing. Emily Blunt and Jason Segal are written as two silly muppets.
It's funny, and I LOVE the cast. However the main relationship seems forced and the film puts too strong a focus on sex. Still worth watching, but could be better. 70/100
One of the best romcoms Ive seen. Very funny, too. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Emily Blunt is enchanting and as always Chris Pratt is hilarious. Excellent script filled with wit and killer comedic hits. Also, makes you want to move to SF and never want to live in Michigan.
It's difficult to watch otherwise very talented people act in a movie so straining for cuteness. Mostly it's an embarrassment for Emily Blunt.
If they could trim 45 minutes off in this movie it would be a rather funny, and entertaining movie. Unfortunately that's not the case.

It's 2022 and just discovered this great Rom-Com after looking through a list of Judd Apatow's older films (as producer). Maybe because I went into this movie with no expectations, I thought it was HILARIOUS. I've been a fan of most of Apatow and Segel's movies, which this one fits well among the others (Forgetting Sarah Marshall in particular). It leans into the Rom-Com genre from an interesting perspective of people who fell in love right away (usually it takes a whole movie for that to happen), but then kind of drift apart as Emily Blunt's character pursues her career, leaving Segel wallowing in mediocrity. As someone currently engaged but have been stagnant in planning the wedding, a lot of this movie hit a little close to home, but I like that. Much of this movie feels realistic, which means you get some bad with the good, and although it ends with a perfectly campy conclusion, it doesn't feel like the typical sappy Rom-Com, chock full of unlikely extravagant romantic gestures. I don't understand why this film doesn't have better audience ratings...it has heart, plenty of good comedy, a top notch cast, and a completely palatable story for those who avoid Rom-Coms.
cute movie! i had heard bad things, so I was pleasantly surprised. It was funny and charming. could have done w/o all the asian jokes tho... seemed excessive??
This us subjective. Form your own opinion on whether you want to watch this movie by doing your own research. I just hope this helps. Great comedic cast of All-Stars (Jason Segal, Kevin Hart, Chris Parnell, Chris Pratt, etc). Funny movie. Kept Mt attention entire time it's just a little too long. About 20 minutes too long.
This was fun however, the problems there seemed to be too real for me to see this as a lighthearted comedy. And in the end I did not think that by marring the couple's problems would get resolved either so... all in all, I found this movie a bit sad for a romantic comedy. I'm glad I watched it as I wanted to see it for a while, but I guess it was not what I expected/wanted from this movie so it seemed like it was wasted time?
Rom com that is worth some chuckles and a formulaic good time. Honestly, I think that's all I got for this one.
1.5 hours of Jason Segel's character cutting off his balls and losing his manhood. Movie frustrated me because he needed to man up but he didn't. Strangely enough Chris Pratt's supposedly irresponsible character had a better grasp on the issue than anyone else in the movie. The last half hour of the movie is even worse.
The couple pair ups didn't work for me, especially O'Connell and . The dialogue and script also wasn't that good. In story telling, you're supposed to show not explain. The "I love you, "Are we wonderful together" dialogue at the outset was rather forced and annoying. Also, does always play the same smart talking wise ass? Talk about type casting. I have no problem with comedic actors playing more serious roles, but the cheating friend's girlfriend seemed a bit cliche. I would have liked to see a more interesting and unique story line, but hell, it's Hollywood looking to make a buck, why experiment? OK movie but nothing to write home about.
