The Fog Reviews

Mar 26, 2025

Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são mais ou menos, o elenco é mais ou menos, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, a história é fraca, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores.

Amazing cinematography, great visuals and practical effects. A script that really reminds you of Stephen kings Tales but with a good ending (joke). The only thing for me is that, even with a fantastic cast, the characters lacked something, they always seems a bit bland.

John Carpenter fresh off his success of ‘Halloween’ brings his next tale of terror along with co-producer Debra Hill inspired by EC Comics and Carpenter taking a trip to Stonehenge The cast includes returning scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Adrienne Barbeau, and the late Janet Leigh 100 years ago on the 21st of April a ship the Elizabeth Dane was sailing A huge fog fell over and a bright light made the ship crash killing all the sailors The small fisherman town of Antonio Bay is said to be haunted by the spirits of the deceased sailors Now it looks like it’s actually true ; on this night in present day the mysterious fog circles in covering the town Slowly the townsfolk fall prey to these ghostly specters and it seems they’re after some valuable gold hidden away in the local church All they have to do is survive until dawn but 6 lives descended from the ones responsible for the sailors’ deaths must be taken Carpenter makes a majority of this work thanks to the use of dark shadows and lighting building a huge amount of atmosphere He lets the mood make the story work, lets the viewer allude to what’s actually hiding in the fog, and as usual the score by Carpenter adds to the eerie ness The landscapes of this fishing town look very gorgeous too with sharp cinematography These are big names but none of the characters are that deep save for father Malone who knows all too well why this fog is happening It’s a good ol fashioned ghost story thats very low budget with pretty tight storytelling having themes of revenge and the resurfacing of repressed past events in small town America; there’s also things like greed, rewriting history, shrugging off the truth or dismissing it, there’s no changing the past no rectifying it, it’s more frightening when you can’t personify evil It’s a great morality tale overall while also working as an effective ghost story The movie still endures to this day even if it doesn’t match Carpenter’s previous work yet still managed to pull in $21 million against a budget of $1 million And it worried him at first since the final product came together when it came to editing the actual cut This is the classic film to watch after 45 years Do yourself a favor and skip the abysmal remake!

Absolute snoozefest.

Though a little tame by modern day standards, The Fog is a murky masterclass in atmosphere-building. The tension rolls in with the sinister inevitability of the eponymous fog bank, helped along by a masterful score by director-composer John Carpenter.

Although a relatively simple idea, John Carpenter utilizes just enough of slow-burn suspense to make a classic addition to the horror genre.

Boring, I didn't like this film at all, It's so slow, I see familiar people in it though, It's not scary, Or it's not creepy, John Carpenter best movie is Halloween🎃

A masterful exercise in atmosphere-building and slow-building tension from one of the masters of horror filmmaking, John Carpenter.

It remains delightfully old fashioned. Carpenter was deliberately making a camp fire ghost story and it absolutely delivers on that basis.

The Shorthand Critic: Director John Carpenter followed up the success of “Halloween” with 1980’s “The Fog”. That off-the-wall choice alone deserves consideration. This is a curious little slow-burn chiller. Its rhythmic vibe and energy is just slightly off-beat. Yet that is what makes it linger in the memory like, you guessed it, fog. This clever direction divided critics of its day, and the film slipped away into the beyond until later gaining a cult-following. This has given it the staying power it deserves as “The Fog” is very unique and peculiar. The cast includes the first pairing of Jamie Lee Curtis from “Halloween” and her mother Janet Leigh from “Psycho”—although their screentime together leaves something to be desired. The story is lean but slick involving a radio DJ (Adrienne Barbeau) hulled up in the top of a lighthouse warning the town of an eerie fog rolling in claiming that—“There’s something in the fog!” The best scene takes place on the roof of the lighthouse where a scary attack ensues with Barbeau delivering the goods. It seems unfathomable that it was not even part of the original cut and came about from a necessary reshoot to jive up the chills. The fog effects are great in their rawness. The major complaint is not seeing more random townspeople being effected by the terror. It would have been easy to incorporate this into the vengeful denouement as the DJ was directing everyone to safety—yet we see no one but the main cast. Still, “The Fog” has an old-fashioned ghost story feel and a creepy score by Carpenter that gets under the skin and haunts. Like Hitchcock’s “The Birds”—you will never see fog the same way again! And that’s saying something.

The Fog is a good spooky revenge horror film with really fantastic cinematography it really captures the atmosphere of the bay area and some of John Carpenter's cast members from his latest blockbuster slasher hit Halloween they did really fantastic performance and really fantastic special fog effects and chilling musical score by John Carpenter.

Immaculate vibes (Carpenter!) with slow, deliberate plotting in the middle act to set up a fun climax.

Love the film after Haloween, a simple ghost story in a simple time. A good watch and it is reasonable short.

A truly great classic horror movie

Une mise en scène notable qui permet de bien ressentir l'ambiance pesante qui entoure le brouillard. Certes le film n'est pas parfait mais il réussi tout de même l'exploit de nous emmener dans cette petite ville côtière avec le danger qui y plane.

I liked the movie’s slow building atmospheric effects, but I think the film has two critical problems. First it spreads the narrative across multiple story lines which reduces the emotional momentum that each one can get. And second, we see the ghosts displaying menacingly in multiple sites at the same time even though we know – as we learn early on – that they have a very concrete, specific goal. This seems to me as too much ado for a job that could have been done quickly.

I'm more drawn to the scenery than the story. But I still can't wait to see what happens next...

I think what may have ruined this film were my high expectations going into it, John Carpenter is widely known and I have much respect for everything he creates but 'The Fog' just isn't his best. The beginning drags on for what feels like eternity and, because the story is so focused on the antagonists, the protagonists are not given very depth, of course this isn't the actors fault's this is simply a writing issue. Personally, I find that this film only works as a nostalgia piece, it is very typical '80s horror and I'm afraid to say but just isn't very good. This film is very atmosphere heavy, in more ways than one, and is undeniably not thrilling or scary - it's quite a shame I didn't enjoy this film and I hope to find better terror in Carpenter's other films.

Not one of my favorite John Carpenter movie

After having watched this film, I am now a Jamie Lee Curtis 1978-1981 Horror Run completist. Sadly, this ranks at the bottom of the pile, definitely above the putrid TERROR TRAIN but slightly below the nostaglia of PROM NIGHT. It is fitting that the movie begins with a campfire ghost story provided by the ever irascible John Houseman, because that's what the film basically is - a simple story some old fart would tell at midnight in some sadistic effort to upset children. And let's face it - fog is probably not the most weather-related phenomena that produces fear and dread. And to be frank, I'm not sure even if younger children would find thrills and chills watching robed creatures with glowing eyes who walk slower than my 82 year old dad emerging from fog. For me, this only holds interest as a nostalgia piece, watching familiar faces from my childhood join forces and earn a paycheck. I must say, though, that Barbeau was born to be a radio personality - her husky voice is perfect for late night weather reports and double entendres. Curtis fans may be disappointed, too - although second billed, it's a very minor role with nothing much to do. Followed by a 2005 remake, which I have not seen, so I'm not sure how closely it adheres to this original.
