The Fountain Reviews
I tried hard to like this movie, I really did. The idea of a conquistador on a quest for the tree of life was deeply captivating, as well as the idea of immortality and the symbolism of all of these ideas is very compelling. But this promise is broken by the film. We do not get to see a quest by the conquistador. We see boring sentimental crying and misery that made me want to leave the theatre. Curious, I endured the pain, and regretted every moment. I see that others like this film. I considered it to be a broken promise just like all clickbait.
A film that's not interested in giving easy answers, The Fountain has its problems stemming from just how mind-screwy it can get but the strong performances, amazing score from Clint Mansell, exploration of thought-provoking themes such as coming to terms with one's own mortality and some incredible visuals make it an ambitious project that's worth checking out at least once.
The movies that take the biggest swings get the harshest criticism. Ignore the urge to find an exact meaning and clear thread in this movie. Just experience it, feel it. Death is inexplicable and this enigmatic movie captures its tragic, beautiful nature.
The Fountain is a cinematic poem, a haunting exploration of love, life, and eternity. Every frame feels like a work of art, with breathtaking visuals and masterful metaphors that make the film as much a journey of the soul as it is a story. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz deliver unforgettable performances, their chemistry embodying a love that transcends time and space. Clint Mansell’s soul-wrenching score perfectly complements the movie’s visuals, capturing the deep sorrow and beauty at its core. For those open to a profound, meditative experience, The Fountain is a visual and emotional masterpiece.
There were many scenes that bored me, but the endings were quite impressive. It's worth watching, but there were a lot of scenes that made me bored.
The most visually stunning film I have ever seen. A transcendent work of art, with a beautiful love story at its heart.
Thought provoking emotion with deep themes & concepts of life & death. Moving dialogue, a great score, & powerhouse acting from Jackman. The high contrast lighting creates striking visuals. Yet a little too ambiguous to seal it.
This movie is really phenomenal. It's is so beautifully done. The three stories that are one, but all unique. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't walk away from this movie in awe. In my opinion it's a masterpiece and heartbreaking.
Woo Woo for the feeble minded.
It is always baffling to me... the lack of compassion when it comes to self expression. I found this film to be beautiful... bare and raw to it's core and yet it is eviscerated for it for the sake of dismemberment. I dislike this platform, these critics... imagine not being responsible for building but instead judging and picking apart ... this film is great in my personal opinion... regardless of what these so-called "top rated critics" label it as... jealously bleeds into these reviews with malice. I challenge those that critique to make something so beautiful. Between Aronofsky and Mansell this landscape is dramatic and wondrous. Give unto awe.
Most of the critics should stick to watching mindless action movies if they can't keep up with a slightly more complex narration. Absolutely beautiful.
Aronofsky's second worst movie...and the worst is Mother! Obviously.
I enjoy the three different stories and perspectives on life and death. What captivates me the most, however, is the soundtrack composed by Clint Mansell. I fkn love that soundtrack.
A souless boring snooze fest that rips off 2001 space odyssey and just tries to be so pretentious it could make one think it's the worst movie ever we'll it's not exactly the very worst or even the worst film by aronofsky ( se Noah!! ) but it's still not a good film i see it's premise of trying to give a message of love glory and live something of whatever but it did not impress me whatsoever rachel weisz is wooden as always and Hugh jackman just overacts this might be his worst movie to date since I can't think of any others his chemistry with weisz is wooden and nonexistent plus the costume designs are so cheap looking they feel like they are made of paper and grocery store bags, the dialogue also is insulting to my intelligence someone once says something about a spaceship, what is he talking about this movie is awful and cringe inducing to watch especially the scenes with the two main leads were awful and he is just daydreaming all the time if you want to something about someone's diary of daydreaming nonsense this is the film for you otherwise don't bother it's an awful film that's not interesting, thought provoking, visually stunning. It's just an unimaginative and meaningless film that darren aronofsky took to seriously with making it like he wanted to become the next Stanley Kubrick well he isn't. He is nothing like Kubrick I could just tell that to the directors face now , your nothing like Stanley Kubrick. ( Even though it's like saying that you will never be like one of your favorite directors ) it just ends of like I said a space odyssey wannabe that mixes itself with a generic love story that was already done back in hollywoods golden age. ) its just a movie that's about someone trying to save his wife and someone says to do strange things it makes no sense, the movie doesn't make sense almost at all it's a lifeless one and a half hour bore with a nonsensical story, unlikeable charachters especially weisz's Izzy oh god I hated her so much I was actually rooting for her to die of that disease she was so shallow and boring and this movies ending was just as awful. a masterpiece the fountain is anything but. Just do anything else play a game, read a book or use your phone or better watch an action film from the 80s or 90s just don't bother with watching the cinemetic bore that is the fountain D
This pretentious excursion into laughably portentous new age faux spiritualism sucked at my will to live. Given the director's now impressive resume, that was surprising but this was one of my all time lows for sure. See it at your peril.
I'm inclined to the director's view that audiences aren't too keen about dwelling on mortality and that is why this film had a mixed reception. I thought it was beautiful, interesting and profound, even though the central message about death is hardly a novel one. I consider this a "great" film, well above its RT rating.
Very... metaphisic? And at times difficult to follow film... Like some others from Aronofsky
The film and score are gorgeous. Acting is flawless. I love it. For me this is about transcendent love, the kind of love that powers huge forces and leaves a mark on the world. Its hard to capture that feeling that you would do anything for someone because of love, and what the result of this love from driven powerful people looks like. I think the parallel story lines of a doctor giving everything to save his wife and the conquistador laying his life on the line for his queen's wishes captures the dedication, affection, respect and fear of loss inherent in these relationships. The third supernatural layer is what for me, takes the feeling of big love to the next level. The metaphysical - being bound through time and space, true soul mates. The visuals, the score, the emotion climax to this realisation - that nothings lost, energy persists, that love is reborn. The stories are thin, and not about the stories at all. For me they are just vehicles for capturing that feeling that Hugh Jackmans characters would move the world for the Rachel Weiszs. The acting here is unreal. Two relationships in different times and different types but full of respect, magic and love. Get swept away in the emotion and feeling, don't try to make too much sense of the link between the stories - the everything easily make sense.
"The Fountain" is a visually stunning and ambitious film that raises profound questions about the human condition. However, its occasionally heavy-handed approach and convoluted storytelling may not be for everyone, making it a solid but not exceptional viewing experience.
