The Gateway Reviews
It's better to rip the Band-Aid off right away: A lot doesn't work with this movie. It's described as a crime thriller, but it lacks on the thrilling part. The story is pretty simple and doesn't do a whole lot to hook viewers in.

The Gateway is such a generic and unimaginative rehash of many other crime dramas, it's likely to be soon forgotten after people see it. It's yet another story about a hero who has an 'against all odds' struggle against gangster thugs.

The Gateway, which could have been a serviceable action film or a gritty drama, unfortunately does itself a disservice by attempting to be both and failing to commit to either.

A B-style thriller, with a long-suffering and uncommunicative protagonist, and a relatively simple but relevant plot. [Full review in Spanish]

As the plot becomes more contrived, full of bad ideas, one hopes for some character redemption, but there is no deliverance from evil.

While a little unsteady, it's a solid film anchored by a strong performance from Shea Wigham. He's an excellent That Guy, and we're lucky to have him.

I can't say I'm sorry to have missed out on more Grillo, because The Gateway provides Whigham with all he needed to announce himself as the pulpy anti-hero of my B-movie dreams.

...has all the downbeat grit that an adult audience could demand from a late-night thriller....

It's clearly making a statement about problematic child care and protective services... that is a very complex equation.

You might have seen something like this before, but this one is well-made and pulls you into its web.

Not quite credible enough to stand up as a gritty, 70s-esque social drama, and lacking the focus of the Training Day-style urban thriller it's marketed as, Michele Civetta's second feature is an awkward but passably entertaining blend of both.

Drug bungles call the shots in a hairy downhill ride.

The Gateway is that much needed crime drama that we've been thirsty for, but doesn't seem to come that often. It works because it's teeth are firmly sunk into the characters, and more than capably led by the highly underrated Shea Whigham.

Parker is an unexpectedly complex character in an otherwise rote shoot-'em-up action film, and while The Gateway doesn't take you anywhere worth going, at least it takes you somewhere different.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 17, 2021
The Gateway is surprisingly emotional, beautifully acted by all, and impressive at capturing the grittiness of Parker's world ...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 11, 2021
The Gateway could be a tough drama or a serviceable genre film, so trouble boils over when it attempts to be both.

An energetic but unnecessarily complex thriller.

It's much like the life it represents: tough, sad, hard to watch at times, and sometimes full of more questions than answers. But in that, you get something that's worthy of the time and attention. A fantastic showcase for Shea Whigham.

Between Olivia Munn and newcomer Taegen Burns this melodrama almost makes it.

At its best when doing character study on Shea Whigham's lead, at its worst when doing the whole suspense, on-the-run thing. [Full review in Spanish]
