The Good Lie Reviews

Oct 3, 2024

For 2014: another A-grade piece of cinema from Reese Witherspoon she plays a humanitarian taking care of a family of South African refugees during the 1987 Sudan civil war it's awful seeing the violent and difficult reality of Africa along with the system diving families apart the movie still shows the Lost Boys of Sudan willing to do whatever it takes in order to stay together it takes a familiar route being a fish-out-of-water story with these refugees struggling to adapt to American soil and just maybe help the others left behind in a hurting country it's true we may be divided by our cultures but it's our humanity that connects us this family of refugees also lives by a code that lying is a sin in itself but they are living the 'good' kind considering the challenges they've faced sure this film feels like corporate Hollywood-esque but it's still a heartwarming and aware journey of a group of people wanting to start over and be free from the traumatizing terrors of a corrupt nation it's really all about these Sudanese individuals, the ones they've lost, the things they've sacrificed, and the hope that lies ahead for them

Told in a simple, not overexplained way, it's a heartbreaking and encouraging story, about some people and places we don't even have an idea of his life

Surprising small-budget film that relates the story of a family of Sudanese conflict refugees from their perspectives. Worth watching.

Now if that isn't some low key white christian American propaganda machine I don't know what is. I liked everything until they started to grow up and dreamed of going to America. I mean like wow. Who ever directed and produced this movie should really rethink the circle they surround themselves with. It can't be that not one person they knew was quietly thinking to themselves "this won't come across as planned dude, don't do it!".

Well paced and heartfelt, with genuine kindness to spare.

Even though I found it to be a white perspective of the events it shows, it's a good film and I love that the actors were actual Sudanese refugees. It portrays well how poorly countries that provide asylum actually assist the refugees, the complete disregard for their culture and needs once they arrive and settle in, and I did miss the happy Hollywoodian ending with everything 100% in its place. By the middle of the film, I was convinced the title referred to the lie that they would find a good life in America (I'm not saying it wasn't better, that's relative, but I really don't think it met their expectations at all, and this is NOT a spoiler). It's overall a good film.

Wow, what a story!! And so realistic, probably because it's played partly by real African refugees. Brilliant, must see!!!

A feel-good film based on a true story. Some timelines were condensed and half-assed, but I guess you need to make a film somehow. 3/5. Some parts felt a bit slow but I did enjoy.

I really enjoyed this movie! It's more realistic than a lot of what is out there. And it does a good job representing the story! So interesting.

I loved this movie. It was touching in a way that showed humanity from a completely different perspective. Simply beautiful.

I did not like it because it was completely unrealistic! As an immigration attorney, I have to say that the ending made me cringe and it was not a "good lie"!

Beautiful movie. I wish there were more movies like this that tell real stories with heart about our world.

Great story up until when the the siblings win relocation to the United States..The it all goes sugar coated after the sister is separated from her brothers. Surely they would have known this before they came from Sudan. Then the dialogue goes mega cheesy. The "Chicken Joke", the Sudanese name for Reese Witherspoon character, in particular the doctor brother. All the African fish out of water stereotypes come out. The employment counselors (Reese Witherspoon/Corey Stoll) , the immigration people, their support officer (Sarah Baker) all bend over backwards to help these brothers. We know that doesn't happen. Its fantasy. The sister is relocated to live with Reese Witherspoon (not believable) Also one of the brothers smashes up a phone booth and gets arrested. Then nothing is mentioned about that. Then one of the brothers goes home (the doctor) and a different brother comes back on a forged passport. Ridiculous!

It's really involving. The culture shock is very well worked and gives us interesting moments (and some funny ones to). The plot is very emotional and the photography is beautiful.
