The Great Train Robbery Reviews
It's a smashing piece of period escapism.

When The Great Train Robbery works, it really works.

It’s an old-school caper film with a modern sense of humor. [Filmmaker Michael Crichton] brings a droll humor to the project, which the three leads play with a light touch, but keeps the caper scenes tight and suspenseful.

An agreeable lark.

...it does exactly what you expect it to do, but does it so well, and with such great enthusiasm, that you’re inclined to forgive its obviousness.

The Great Train Robbery is a fluffy piece of entertainment, highlighted by Geoffrey Unsworth's moody cinematography of Victorian interiors, in all their musty splendor.

The Great Train Robbery is not a good adventure film and it's a shame because it could have been. [Full Review in Spanish]

The Great Train Robbery is elegant and stately. But it is a slow-moving story, when what we really want from a period thriller is a feeling for the excitement generated during the actual events.

Crichton is after a giggly quality as if it's being told as a pub yarn, soaked in exaggeration and acute trickery to defeat impossible hurdles, while never far from redoubtable moral lesson.

An entertaining thriller that stumbles occasionally on overlong dialogue sequences.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 5, 2008
Crichton's films drag in dialog bouts, but triumph when action takes over.

Lumbers along at a dull pace.
| Original Score: C | Jan 5, 2007
The characters stay largely undeveloped, while -- despite superficially peculiar features -- the robbery is stripped of the ingenious exposition of the novel.

he climactic heist of the gold, with Mr. Connery climbing atop the moving railroad cars, ducking under bridges just before a possible decapitation, is marvelous action footage that manages to be very funny as it takes your breath away.

Imbued with the spirit of the '60s and '70s counterculture.

Connery is one of the best light comedians in the movies, and has been ever since those long-ago days when he was James Bond.
