The Grudge Reviews
Its lack of surprising features, the extremely predictable jumpscares, and the complete disregard for the audience, treating the viewers like the dumbest people ever, make The Grudge one of the worst horror films of the last few years.

Perhaps the greatest horror here is seeing a director’s talent be so misused.

It ends up being an aggressively middle of the road movie and the kind we’ve come to expect in early January.

That's a lot of characters to introduce, find some nugget of personality for the audience to connect to, and then dispose of.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Aug 17, 2022
The Grudge is another in a long line of Hollywood's ill-advised attempts to adapt a culturally-specific strain of horror for Western audiences.

...despite the impressive gore, this just isn't a scary movie. It's a slow one that turns plodding after too long. It plays like someone tried to make It Follows and then stuffed it with millennial horror tropes.

The cliché-stuffed remake has zero new ideas to scare us with.

Not often that you're hit with a film so lost in its madness yet so dull to watch. The best type of bad movies are fun ones to watch, and this is not that.

A nasty piece of work that would have been a lot better if it didn't feel so hacked to bits.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Dec 30, 2020
The issue with this film is it's all over the place... I just don't know why they made it so complicated unless they were gonna tie something else in.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Oct 13, 2020
Pesce's film lacks anything discernibly Shimizu-esque. Individual moments of tension materialise, only to be undercut by noisy jump scares or needlessly flashy visuals.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 14, 2020
Wanders a bit too far from the franchise's established beats for its own good, but there's still some good stuff here for horror fans.

Unfortunately, the 2020 version of The Grudge is an example of a remake that should not have attempted a comeback.

I wish I could tell you that this latest iteration of The Grudge is a good version of this story, but I don't want to lie to you.
| Original Score: D | Jul 8, 2020
It's a throwback to an era not far removed but mostly swept under the rug. The Grudge is a vicious update to a genre staple, it's not groundbreaking, but it's a got enough shock, awe and chills to keep you entertained.

Each thread could have functioned as a standalone film about the terrible consequences of presuming safety in a world menaced by invisible dangers.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 26, 2020
The jump scares are spot on and the level of gore produced by the makeup artists is truly horrifying.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 23, 2020
The dramatic payoff to the buy-in of all this bleak seriousness never really amounts to anything and it makes the viewing kind of a chore.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Mar 22, 2020
...we're suffering from a dearth of true boogeymen, the figures that loom in our shared pop-cultural nightmares. It's the faces that stay with us.

An instant front runner for worst movie of the year.
